Anyone here had lessons to learn the front crawl and breast stroke, as an adult swimmer?

Come talk to me if you have.

I want to learn as I'm told by the chiropracter that the breast stroke, properly executed, would be very good for my particular back and shoulder issue. I also think that watching swimmers who can swim like that is very, kind of, aesthetically pleasing yes, I'm weird like that so I want to join the party.
But I have a fear of getting my head under the water whilst moving in case I take on a ton of unwanted water Grin
What's it like to learn?

DP taught me last year. I went from foggy paddling fairly competently and steadfastly refusing to put my head under; to being pretty speedy at both (but I strongly prefer front crawl and do that more!)

Getting over the fear of putting my head in was tough but it's actually fine and swimming with your head out is bad for your back and your posture; and it feels very wrong! I haven't looked back since.

I do use a nose plug though. I hate getting water up my nose!

Me, my breaststroke and breathing were crap 12-18 months ago but both breaststroke and front crawl are good for my knackered neck and shoulders. I joined adult improver lessons, I have had a few months off post surgery and am due back this week.

I too hated putting my head under water but am over it now - humming a tune helped me to learn to breathe properly - exhaling through my nose while humming a slow tune helped me enormously in the first few sessions.

Yes. I could do breast stroke but somehow managed to get my silver survival as a child without being able to crawl. I went to lessons in the same pool as the DC, not at the same time and only occasionally with the same teacher. I can now butterfly and dive properly and everything. And the stroke techniques have changed a lot too.

Yes, I did a couple of years ago when in UK. I had one to one lessons. They were great exercise and challenging. I could get myself around but never learned any technique as a DC. I stopped when we moved so didn't get as far as I would like but I did make real progress. I understand much more about what I should be doing in the water.

Put a tennis ball between your chin and chest for breast stroke to get the correct position for your head

I prefer front crawl/freestyle as it’s an easier position in the water to my mind and more graceful to execute

I had to relearn to swim as an adult after I lost the use of an arm - I found someone with a private 'endless' pool which is great as there is no one else watching you, the teacher is right by you and can see exactly what you are doing, and then can use floats, fins, snorkels and whatever they like to teach. And unlike a hotel pool which many lessons are in, you just keep going without having to worry about turning.
When I started swimming in 2014 my big target was to swim 400m (I could splash maybe 5m at the start). Today I'm sulking as I didn't get a ticket for a 6km open water swim event Grin

That's very helpful. I'm going to my local pool tomorrow to find out about one to one lessons. I can swim already so I'm not starting from scratch, hopefully it won't take too many lessons before I'm able to swim properly whilst humming, breathing and holding a tennis ball under my chin Grin

Well impressed with your achievements though, Dibbler.
