I'm going to Krakow tomorrow and I'm very excited!

Booked it six months ago and can't believe it's finally happening! Going with a close friend who was widowed last year; she wasn't very enthusiastic at the time of booking but now she's equally excited and has just sent me a photo of her packed bag 😃

Going for four nights (was five but Ryanair changed the flights and took a day off us 😠) We have everything planned (I think!) but it's going to be cold isn't it, about the same as the UK in January?

Have you checked the forecast? Grin

goforkyourself · 13/11/2018 17:54

Yes I have! About 8c during the day and 1c at night 😯 We're flying from the Med so having to dig out gloves and scarves 😱

I can recommend Camelot which is a cafe off the main square.

Have a great time! I was there three weeks ago and loved it, far more than I expected to if I’m honest.

What have you got planned?

Watto1 · 13/11/2018 17:58

If it's not too early in the year for it, the Christmas market in the centre is lovely.

goforkyourself · 13/11/2018 18:03

We're planning to spend the first day wandering round, doing a walking tour and seeing the castle etc. Second day austwitz and third day the salt mines

Ohhhhhh I’m going next year!! PLEASEEEEE do a detailed trip report!!! Enjoy xx

Krakow is beautiful. Lovely to walk around, very friendly people. We also went to Auschwitz and found that on the way there, on the bus, everyone was totally silent. It's a profoundly moving and affecting experience.

You'll have an amazing time but do wrap up warm :)

goforkyourself · 13/11/2018 18:07

It's supposed to be a beautiful city, can't wait!

Don't think I'm prepared for austwitch though, can you ever be?

Would be particularly interested to hear about the night life

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 18:12

Goforkyourself, I think all you can do is be respectful and react to how you feel when you get there. It's not a place for selfies or for jokey photo poses; you'll find that everyone is very quiet and reflective, I suspect. It certainly brought home to me the human scale of suffering, more so than the Holocaust exhibition at the IWM (which I think is also very affecting).

Kyratzis · 13/11/2018 18:13

Enjoy! I'd love to go there, it looks gorgeous!

goforkyourself · 13/11/2018 18:17

Ha Badger I don't know what the nightlife will be like Grin Going with my friend who's just got herself back on her feet following the death of her husband.

I will check out the nightlife for you though Wink

I recommend the Walkative walking tours - you just pay what you think it is worth or what you can afford and they are fab.

Auschwitz is completely harrowing and heartbreaking and the Salt Mines are stunning. Schindler’s factory tour is well worth a visit too if you’re interested in the history.

Not sure where you are travelling from but coming from the UK restaurants were very cheap in comparison and there is a brilliant choice of places to eat.

It feels a very safe city and we found the locals very friendly and laid back.

Uber is super cheap too so don’t bother booking airport transfers.

goforkyourself · 13/11/2018 18:19

Thank you Sweetest xx

You're very welcome. Come back and let us know how you found it all! It's quite a magical place, Krakow.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 18:21

Oh yes, we ended up at Schindler's factory too. That, and Auschwitz, are how history comes off the pages of a book or film and becomes real to us, I think.

goforkyourself · 13/11/2018 18:26

Thank you for all your advice, mutts I'll add the schlindlers museum to our list!

Fabulous place. Pimiento is a great restaurant

kikisparks · 13/11/2018 19:27

Went a few weeks ago, didn’t go to auschwitz but would recommend the salt mines, the free walking tour and Schindler’s factory museum of the nazi occupation of Poland.

kikisparks · 13/11/2018 19:27

And yes the food was so cheap :)
