Why does everyone seem to be wearing blankets?

Is this some new trend? Confused Several of the mums I see on the school run appear to have just chucked a blanket around themselves instead of putting on a coat. My friend said a mum at her school was wearing a blanket exactly the same as the one my friend has on her sofa! I can't see how practical they are, especially when it's windy. They flap about all over the place!

I'm wondering if these people will start bundling themselves up in their duvets instead of blankets when it gets colder.

It is a step up from wearing pyjamas tho.

I suspect an overhang from those restaurants in Europe that provide blankies for chilly diners on cool evenings.

halfwitpicker · 13/11/2018 12:41

I have no idea. Looks ridiculous.

Hygge gone too far IMHO

mostdays · 13/11/2018 12:43

Idk, we've all started wearing ponchos and wraps at work lately, maybe people think, why bother spending extra for one when I can just wrap a blanket round me?

OoohAyyye · 13/11/2018 12:50

Am actual blanket? Not a knitted shawl/poncho? I love shawls and ponchos. I get too hot in a coat after I've been walking uphill to preschool so they are great for me. If you are describing what I wear then I don't think you sound very nice. If they are actually 'wearing' blankets then that is bizarre.

AintNobodyHereButUsRavens · 13/11/2018 13:06

Well I can't say I've actually inspected these garments with my hands so they might well be ponchos or shawls, but ponchos and shawls don't usually trail right down to the ankles, do they? They look as if they have literally taken a big blanket, folded it in half so it's a triangle and then draped it over their shoulders.

Is it deff a blanket? Because I have a blanket scarf which is huge so can look like a blanket but is actually a scarf

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/11/2018 16:19

I bought one of those blanket scarves, which looks great draped open- but is literally impossible to wear over a coat. If it’s cold enough for a massive scarf, it’s cold enough for a coat- hence it’s completely useless until spring when I can drape it over my jumper again.

Plus scarf/blanket = skanket, which just sounds horrible doesn’t it? Oooh let me just grab my skanket. It will never catch on!

OldGreyBoots · 13/11/2018 16:32

@thenewaveragebear1983 maybe you should call it a blarf instead Grin

ttheycantalk · 13/11/2018 16:42

I've noticed that round here, it's mainly overweight people wearing ponchos and blankets. I see the odd slim person wearing them, but it's mainly larger people who favor them.
I expect they're less restricting than a structured coat that has narrow sleeves.

ttheycantalk · 13/11/2018 16:42

I'm large, but I'm damned if I'm wearing a blanket

KenAdams · 13/11/2018 16:58

I've got a blanket wrap which I've had for a few years now and I love it. It's designed to be worn it's not an actual blanket.

NancyDonahue · 13/11/2018 17:08

I've seen a few blanketed people. Must be a new fashion. One lady today had one draped over one shoulder and it was almost down to the floor. If that was me if trip over it.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/11/2018 17:13

I love the look of big long blanket scarves and ponchos but I'm too short and would look swamped. They look very practical for on-and-offing.

peridito · 13/11/2018 17:15

Pictures ? Diagrams ?

UCWorries · 13/11/2018 17:17

I'm fat and love the sound of this Grin

NothingOnTellyAgain · 13/11/2018 17:17

Because it's got a bit chilly out?

Responding to thread title only :D

Lweji · 13/11/2018 17:19

I wasn't a fan the first time and I won't be wearing one now either.

It's part of the 90s revival, isn't it?

But compared with the ubiquitous leopard prints, they look nice and stylish. Grin

Minniemountain · 13/11/2018 17:26

Blankets was a 90's trend? It must have been too wet for them where I lived.

Lweji · 13/11/2018 17:35

I definitely remember "blanket"/poncho style at some point between the 80s and the 90s, but not so much for young people. More like middle aged over 40s like some of us now.
