Any doctors about

Ds woke up yesterday with a swollen eye that's purple/pink on his eye lid and around the eye

Hasn't bashed himself on anything

Went to the doctor yesterday who thought it was an allergic reaction

Gave him some piriton, he's woken up this morning and it's more swollen

Do I take him back or leave it a few days? Happy to pm photos if needed

Not a doctor but one of mine had peri orbital cellulitis. If it's that then antibiotics are the only way and the sooner the better.
Is it hot to the touch and painful?

Dawsonforehead · 13/11/2018 06:34

If it looks worse take him back, it could be an infection (periorbital cellulitis) especially if only in one eye. May not have been as obvious yesterday. Keep taking photos for the GP to compare.

Bodear · 13/11/2018 06:37

Definitely take him for a further appointment but I’d find a hospital that has a specialist eye unit and then go to a walk in centre at that hospital, or maybe call NHS Direct to access the eye unit. Vision is not something to be taken lightly and GPs are not specialists.

Yes, what Bodear and PP said. My ds had periorbital cellulitis in both eyes when he was 3 or 4 and took a few days before I brought him into a pediatric a&e and they told me off for not having come sooner as he could have lost his eye sight. Easily treated with antibiotics if you get it soon enough, very serious if you don't.

fraggle84 · 13/11/2018 07:02

I'll phone the doctor this morning and get him back in

We don't have an a&e here just a minor injuries unit who only really deal with out of hours gp appointments and anything that needs an x Ray

I can get him to the big hospital in the city though if it's no better after seeing the doctor just wouldn't be until tonight/tomorrow

If possible take a ball point pen and outline/draw the edge of the red area. If it spreads then you will know for sure that it's an infection. The rate of change from when you draw this to the doctor seeing it will help them determine how aggressive the infection is.

Dawsonforehead · 13/11/2018 07:15

I know it's not in your control but the earlier you can get back in the better as they will refer you to your local Eye hospital and you want this sorted out during the day

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 13/11/2018 07:24

My DD has also had periorbital cellulitis, needed admission and IV antibiotics. Get him seen by someone (not a GP, someone more specialised) sooner rather than later as it can spread.
FWIW, my GP said it was "probably a virus". When it got worse the next day we took her to A&E at the children's hospital and they admitted her straight away.

On our way to the hospital now thankyou for the help

Will update later

Good luck op and well done.

Chucknology · 13/11/2018 07:56

Good luck OP.

Bodear · 13/11/2018 21:12

Hi OP, how did you get on?

fraggle84 · 14/11/2018 13:51

Was definitely worth going.

They did a really thorough eye check including his vision. He's got 5 days of eye drops as they said it's infected

Blobby10 · 14/11/2018 14:02

If it IS orbital cellulitis he has my utmost sympathy. I've had it 3 times and its really painful.

SofiaAmes · 15/11/2018 00:15

So glad you went!!!

Rachelover40 · 15/11/2018 00:21

He must go back to the doctor. Make sure he takes the antihistamines, doesn't rub the eye and uses something like Optrex to bathe both eyes.

It's probably nothing serious, most likely an infection but you can't take chances with eyes so do visit doctor again. If you're not happy with the GP's diagnosis, go to A&E.

Did you see an improving since yesterday?
