Anyone stayed in Sorrento and visited Pompeii? Looking at going for a long weekend next year but am wondering how easily doable Pompeii is?

It's close, as is Herculaneum and Capri.

Really easy by train

WilmaJean · 12/11/2018 18:20

Very easy, especially by train.

LIZS · 12/11/2018 18:22

About 30 min by direct train, stops very close to the main entrance. Depending where you stay in Sorrento it can be a 20 min+ walk or bus to the station.

Sorrento's train station is easy to get to and takes you to Herculaneum and Pompeii. Couple of hours on the train but preferable to driving on Italy's roads! Herculaneum is smaller but loads to see.

Very easy - about 40 mins by train if I remember correctly - and much cheaper than any organised coach tour from a hotel.

That's great, thanks all! Is there lots to do in Sorrento too?

Sorrento is a mix of old and new. There is the old town full of little alley ways with bars, restaurants, shops, then there is the port area with restaurants. Please take a good read of tripadvisor restaurant reviews as there is a particular portside restaurant which...ermm....isnt well reviewed ( i think they have a sign claiming jamie oliver eats there ..meh)

Apart from that, the rest of the town is like any other bust commerical town.

You could explore up in the direction of massa Lubrensa if you like and i can recommend a nice hotel if you havent already booked..

Sorrento is lovely, make sure you have a drink in the Foreigner's Club, been there since the war. There is a little theatre which often has a musical on featuring well known Italian songs, it's well worth a visit. Great little shops, bars and restaurants, you will love it!

Thank you so much Arnoldthecat. We're looking at going Good Friday - Easter Monday. The packages on Tui look good - around £1500 for flights and hotel for 3 of us. Looking at The Hotel Michaelangelo?

Yeah the train is super easy, Herculaneum is also worth a visit. It's much smaller than Pompeii but actually better preserved!

We got a driver with a car. Was so handy as were were there in August for a wedding with a 6mo. Had a great tour about. Well worth the money.
