How much do you read with your primary aged DC?

Just wondering how much people read school books with their primary-aged DC? I have DS1 who is nearly 10 & in Year 5, who doesn't need us to read with him as he now reads anything & in his head. Then DS2 is in Year 3 & his teacher has said we need to hear him read 3 times a week. Ds3 is in Reception & his teacher recommends he reads every day.

I try to read with the smaller 2 most days, but some days I struggle to fit them both in, especially when we have swimming lessons or Beavers.

A friend of mine has been told that she must hear her DC read every day but says she can't because she works (both parents home from 5pm & DC is an only child).

Does everybody else manage to fit it in? If so, how?

I have to listen to dc8 and dc6 read three times a week but I listen whilst I'm cooking, they sit in the kitchen with me. I only do it when it's an easy meal so I can fully Listen to them to write in their reading diary other wise we read before they go to bed.

We used to do reading before school when DD was fresh.

ps. It is important to hear your eldest occasionally to check for expression and correct pronunciation or harder words (and to check he is staying accurate and not just skipping bits).

Year 3 DC...most evenings but sometimes just a couple of pages.

DD is in year 2. They want us to do 10 mins reading a day and practice spellings. Some days it's just not possible as both me and DH work and there's days we are out the house at 7:30 and not getting back till 6pm. We do what we can when we can. Usually 3-4 times a week

Lolly86 · 12/11/2018 19:21

DD is in reception and I hear her read every day, if I'm at work then DH or DM hear her read. But she enjoys doing it. Usually after dinner or before bed before j read her a bedtime story

Allyg1185 · 12/11/2018 19:25

My ds is 7 he gets a reading book home from school on a Tuesday and its to be back by Friday. He reads it to me at bedtime one night and then my husband the next night. We also read him a story every night before bed

FissionChips · 12/11/2018 19:29

I read 2 books with dd (6yrs) every night. She does activities after school each day but we still manage to read, it’s important.

Nightfall1983 · 12/11/2018 19:33

DS is in year one. He reads for 10 - 15 mins 4 times a week and practices spellings around 5 nights a week (10 spellings a week). That’s enough imo, he is tired after school I think he does enough between 9 and 3

Nquartz · 12/11/2018 19:39

CD (year 2) reads to us most days, but she is a bit behind compared to her peers i think (about half way through level 5, there are at least 6 free readers in her class). She does activities 3 days a week but we fit it in around meals, bedtime, weekend mornings etc. She has 6 spellings a week to learn as well and she just brought home a maths text book which we've got to fit in somehow too.

She is an only child though and I pick her up from school everyday so we have a decent amount of time.

Nquartz · 12/11/2018 19:41

Also, I've been told that even reading a couple of pages a day is better than lots of pages less frequently (i.e. Little & often).

BitchQueen90 · 12/11/2018 19:50

DS is in year one. We read every night in bed before he goes to sleep.

Crunchymum · 12/11/2018 19:53

Have a preschooler (in school nursery full time) and year 1 child.

Both have x3 books sent home weekly, we try to read every night. We also have lots and lots and lots of books and I encourage the kids to "read" independently as well. Reading is an activity in our house!

I don't enjoy reading to a wriggly (almost) 4yo with the attention span of a gnat but I do like it now my Y1 DC is beginning to truly be able to read independently!!!

Juanbablo · 12/11/2018 20:00

I try for 4 times a week. DC's are 4, 8 and 11. I feel it's not enough but can't really manage more.

itsboiledeggsagain · 12/11/2018 20:17

I have a y1 and Y2 we hear them both read about 3 times a week. They both read very well too and normally have up to an hour reading in bed first thing and last thing.

Also homework on Saturday morning and they learn their own spellings for a weekly test.

SoyDora · 12/11/2018 20:21

Every day (reception). She can read very well and enjoys it so we just do it at bedtime.
Also have a pre schooler and DD1 reads her a bedtime story!

Didicat · 12/11/2018 20:24

I have a year one who reads to me every day, she won’t stop mid book. Both DH and I work, it is just fitted in sometimes straight from school or whilst we are waiting for extracurricular to start in the car. I find she reads worse at bedtime so try and do it earlier. We always read to both kids at bedtime.

OhMrTumnus · 12/11/2018 20:28

We have 2DC - one in reception and a preschooler. We've always read to them pretty much every night since they were born and continue to. Though it is hard to keep it up and I can see how difficult it can be, particularly with other homework.

wendz86 · 12/11/2018 20:29

I read to 7 and 3 year old every night . 7 year old reads to me pretty much every night . Usually only a couple of pages but we are in the habit now . She also reads to herself .

wendz86 · 12/11/2018 20:32

I’m not home till 6.30 with kids most nights but we do baths / showers then I read with youngest and eldest once youngest is asleep .

hidinginthenightgarden · 12/11/2018 20:35

DS is in yr 1 and we read most days. I have found that the best way to fit it in is to do it in the car on the way to school. He sits in the front next to me ( to stop the fighting with his sister) and thats how we fit it in. Otherwise we struggle as we often don't get in until half 6/7 pm after clubs etc.

confusedofengland · 12/11/2018 20:44

I think my issue is with having the 3 DC & not having any help with them (DH leaves when they're eating breakfast & gets back to put them to bed). This means that on activity nights I might get to read with one child but not both younger ones. One particular night of the week we are at activities from 3.15pm (at school) to 7pm, then it's shower & bed!

I do go through books with Ds1, we talk about them & I also test his vocabulary & get him to look up any words he doesn't know in a dictionary, but really his reading is excellent so I'm happy with that.

Same here op. 3kids and only one parent home until after bed.you just do what you can and don't sweat it.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 12/11/2018 21:25

DS1 is 13 so past this point but still reads often.

DS2 is 7 and reads every morning on our way to school. It's become habit and, as lazy as I am, it means one less thing to do after school.

sadwithkiddies · 12/11/2018 21:54

single parent to 5.
we read every day. 13 & 11 yr old now read alone for 30 minutes before lights off. 5 year old reads to me 2 books....then goes off to bed with books. 2 littlies are read to during the day - and 3 year yr old goes off to bed with books with nightlight.

Notso · 12/11/2018 22:00

I try to hear them read every day. Often it's in the morning while I'm making their lunch or unloading the dishwasher.
