Would you go to the GP with this or wait for your smear test?

Posting here for traffic. Sorry if TMI. I am 55 and had a Mirena coil fitted donkeys years ago. If memory serves it should have been changed in 2005 but my GP at the time said to leave it in as it had stopped my periods (which was the point of it) and wasn't causing any problems.
I asked again recently if it should be removed for whatever reason and again the same GP said to leave it in as it's not causing any issues.
I have literally never had a period or any blood whatsover once it was fitted and working until today.

I have a smear test booked for the 5th December. Would you go to the Doc about this or leave it and discuss it with the nurse that does the smear on the 5th. It's not masses of blood. No pain or any other signs.
My sister has uterine cancer currently and is undergoing treatment. I don't know the details as we are out of touch. I have only heard this information secondhand.

WWYD? TIA.

Is it a hormonal one? It maybe that the hormones have worn off and you are getting a period. It does seem an awfully long time to have one in to be honest.....

I would go to the GP

Per the NHS: see your GP. Fingers crossed it's all fine but better that the check. The smear test only covers cervical cancer I believe.

Smear is a screening tool for non symptomatic people. Unusual bleeding should be investigated by gp xx

Err the Marina coil only lasts 5 years you a are way past time for changing it by like 8 years. I'd go to the doctor's can't believe they have left it in that long, even a copper coil is only for 10 years I believe.

No periods continuing could be due to menapourse as there is no way there are any hormones left in it. I could tell the difference with mine after 3 years.

See your GP. The cervical screening test does not test for cancer, it's a screening test for changes that indicate cancer could develop in the future. Abnormal bleeding should be referred by your GP to gynecology.

Definitely GP, this needs to be checked out properly and as pp said, a smear is a screening tool, not diagnostic.

Wow! Fast replies thanks everyone. I have looked at the link thanks Nacreous I shall ring on Wednesday morning first thing as I will probably get seen by the GP the same day that way. I'm in work tomorrow.

Glad to hear it! Fingers crossed that it’s nothing to worry about.

Thanks. Bit scared and DH having forty fits and a bag to put them in as he is not well at all and relies on me massively. I shall report back.

See your GP - they should / will refer you to a gynaecologist
