How bad is a tooth extraction?!

I'm starting to panic about mine tomorrow - it's not the extraction itself, but the stories online of pain for the next few days! How bad is it really going to be with no hot drinks and only soft food and a big swollen jaw?!

I felt nothing.

I had one out this morning. It took a while (and four injections) to numb it, but it was out in seconds! I’m usually a proper wimp at the dentist too.

It’s aching now that the anaesthetic has worn off, but it’s manageable. I ate a sandwich on the other side of my mouth about an hour and a half afterwards.

I’m just pleased not to have to go through any more root canal work!

Shockers · 12/11/2018 17:22

I went straight to work too. I was ok.

I begged the dentist to take a big one out about 6months ago as I’d had unbearable toothache. The extraction is quick and painless but the pain afterwards for the rest of the day and night was awful, bled quiet a lot and it took a good couple of months to heal 🤷‍♀️ sorry it’s not pleasant but you’ll be fine! good luck

Had 4 wisdoms out at once when i was 23. Awful. Couldn't open my mouth to speak or eat. Bruises across my neck. Clots. Pain relief didnt work. I used to shower ice cold water over my jaw. That did help.
I've had 2 large extractions in my 40s. Not so bad, manageable with paracetamol and salt water rinses. Back at work next day, i never told anyone.

Xuli · 12/11/2018 18:12

I'm a bit worried because I don't have toothache so anything will be worse, no blessed relief here!

Though I have used it as an excuse to wangle an extra day working from home the day after...

I've had three removed. Two where perfectly fine no problems didn't need pain medication after.

One I got dry socket. It was my first extraction and the dentist didn't explain the aftercare well and I prodded my hole a lot. The pain was terrible. Went back to the dentist and they picked it with clove and dissolvable wadding. So much better.

You will be ok follow the instructions your dentist gives you and don't be tempted to poke it. If the pain gets worse the next day go back to your dentist for an emergency appointment.

Knittedfairies · 12/11/2018 21:07

I was fine; no problems at all.

LoveWasAccidental · 12/11/2018 21:31

I had 2 wisdom teeth out recently and honestly it was no bother. I didn't need any pain relief afterwards. The whole thing was less uncomfortable and easier than the average trip to the hygienist!

Ginmakesitallok · 12/11/2018 21:34

I've had 2 wisdom teeth out and one upper middle tooth out. No problems at all. No pain. You'll be fine

RoseMartha · 12/11/2018 21:41

I had three teeth out at one visit with local anaesthetic last year. Two at the front and a molar. I had a partial denture fitted at the same time. Yes i was terrified but it was over quicker than I thought. Ate soup etc for couple of days, thought i would never be able to bite into anything again but can bite on most things including biscuits etc now (not apples though).

dementedma · 12/11/2018 21:46

will do anything to preveng having an extraction. all the pulling and tugging and crunching. Sorry, but that's my experience. have been having dental work for the best part of 2018 including root canal treatment, all to prevent extractions.

Shockers · 13/11/2018 10:06

The ache has gone this morning, and the gap isn’t noticeable when I smile. I feel better already because there will be no more root canal infections!

Good luck today, OP.

Xuli · 13/11/2018 10:49

Glad to hear that shockers Smile Hope it stays like that today!

I think the aftercare is quite important. Leave the salt rinses until the following day.

I took ibuprofen and went to bed early last night. I don’t usually take it because it irritates my stomach, but it was worth it to get to sleep.

I feel a kind of euphoria at being rid of it! Grin

Xuli · 13/11/2018 11:47

I bet you do! I'm having out this evening so my plan is to just take some painkillers and go to bed a few hours later, and hope it feels alright after some sleep

It’s absolutely fine. Re dry socket - just go easy with your toothbrish for a few days, so the scan doesn’t fall off.

desperateswisswife · 13/11/2018 11:59

scab, even

Shockers · 14/11/2018 12:18

How’re you doing @Xuli? 😬

Xuli · 14/11/2018 12:31

Gah! Feels really sore today and I'm probably not doing myself any good by being too scared to eat anything after reading terrifying things about dry socket!!! But thanks for asking
