Potential move to Lichfield

Hello! Can anyone tell me about good areas In Lichfield please? We're thinking of relocating there. Criteria:

  • We have two preschoolers and so want to move somewhere with good schools.
  • We work in Birmingham so I think we'd need closer to the a38 side for a shorter commute?
  • We have a total max budget of up to £850k (although closer to £750k would be more comfortable). We'd prefer a period property so not sure if that limits our search area also? Although If there was a new build not on a cramped estate/ not too overlooked we'd definitely consider it
Thanks!

Alrewas, fradley, Yoxall, Kings Bromley all worth a look. Private or state schools?

SnugglySnerd · 11/11/2018 21:29

Lichfield is lovely. Great train links to Birmingham.

Would prefer state. I hear king Edwards is good? So maybe in the catchment for there?

I stayed in Lichfield a couple of times for work and thought it was lovely. A really nice small city with good shopping and the cathedral is stunning.

I don't know it well enough to know what the nicest bits to live in are but I did think it was a great place.

Do you mean the King Edwards secondaries? Either private or grammar and all selective so if your kids aren’t academic they will be limited. There is John Taylor - quite well rated comprehensive that the villages I mentioned above are in the catchment for.

Lichfield itself is nice. Big Waitrose, some nice restaurants etc, as well as cobbled streets around the market and cathedral.

Where do you live now?

sophie150 · 11/11/2018 22:51

Thanks

Ah didn't realise the king Eds was a grammar.

We're currently in harborne- south west Bham. There's no options other than grammar/ fee paying here for secondary. Was hoping to go somewhere with good comps in case the grammar option doesn't work out!

We may look at Sutton as well. I'd prefer not to look too north of Lichfield as I worry the commute may be too much.

I think Sutton Coldfield is much better - more going on, easier travel and good schools (again good grammars if you get that far or easy commute to Egbaston grammars). Try Four Oaks/Streetly/Mere Green if your budget stretches that far. If you’re near to a train station eg Four Oaks the train into Brum is easy.

King Edward VI Lichfield is not a grammar. It is a state comprehensive. No grammars in Lichfield. It's a fine place to live.

Sutton is also lovely and the schools are good.
In Lichfield there is also the Friary school and Nethercote. I don't know much about either school except that we used to go swimming at the Friary 20+ years ago. I gather Nethercote has improved in recent years.
What about Solihull?

hmmwhatatodo · 12/11/2018 20:15

And there I was thinking this was a huge OITNB fan!

Barton under needwood is a wonderful village on the A38 near Lichfield (nearer burton though) with a brilliant high school.
Kings Bromley also abbots Bromley

Opheliasgoldenwine · 12/11/2018 20:33

Lichfield is lovely and the cross city train line runs through here. Sadly the new improved shopping centre, Friarsgate, has been axed due to lack of funds which included more cafes and a cinema/. Hopefully it will go ahead one day as some buildings have been bulldozed in preparation. The HS2 is going round the north of Lichfield and some villages by Packington/Whittington, something you need to be aware of. The 3 high schools The Friary, King Edwards and Netherstowe, there are some good primary schools too. Beacon Park is big and has a brilliant playground for the kiddies.

I grew up in Four Oaks which is also on the cross city train line and also has good primary and Arthur Terry Secondary. Be careful here on catchment as all very popular and not guaranteed a place (friend has just moved half a mile up the road for this reason). Nice bars and close to Sutton Park too.
