Mine has just died and I can't justify splashing out hundreds for a fancy Kitchenaid type.

Anyone got a less expensive one they would recommend?

Is there any stretch in your budget at all? It's just that Curry's have a KitchenAid on their website at £274 on a Black Friday deal. Think it ends tonight though?

You can get an entry-level Kenwood Chef for £139 if you don’t mind white; silver is a bit more but still under £200. If you want something prettier to live on the worktop then this KMix, also by Kenwood, is reduced to £195.

Alternatively, vintage models go for peanuts on eBay.

Thanks to both of you, I'll have a look at those. I could pay more but would rather not in the run up to Christmas. Do you have experience of those machines?

I bought the kmix off Amazon in a black Friday event a few years back.
I've got nothing to compare it to, but I think it's great! and looks v pretty in my display cabinet thing

I have a Chef and my sister has a KMix. They’re both excellent. The thread about items you’ve had for 20+ years is full of people with ancient workhorse Kenwoods which keep on trucking.

There isn’t much to choose between a Kitchenaid and a Kenwood in terms of function. They’re both well built and powerful. Kitchenaids are beautiful and very good value in America but the premium on U.K. prices is ludicrous.

I'm a pro baker and I have picked up second hand kenwood chefs on gumtree for under £100.
I even own one from the 80's which is still going strong and it's heavily used.
They pop up a lot so I assume for some they're a fad that end up taking up too much space.
Good for me though - I own 5 and only bought one of them brand new!

to look a bit like the kitchenaid - the kenwood patissier - much better value

My Kmix recently broke, the lever to lift the stand no longer works rendering the entire thing useless. Its about 2 years old but probably only been used a dozen times. Genuinely annoyed over it and can't actually find anyone locally who repairs this kind of thing these days.

I bake for a living, and I have both a KitchenAid and a Kenwood.
Kenwood is by far the better machine. I regret purchasing the KitchenAid now.
Buy as much Kenwood as you can for your money.

Thanks for the recommendations. We have gone for a Kenwood chef on offer on Amazon. Can't wait to get it!

Good choice! My Kenwood Chef is on it's last legs now, but we worked out today that it is at least 40 years old - it was my Nan's before I had it and she was a professional cook

I still made my Christmas cake in it today tho'!

Nacreous · 12/11/2018 18:16

My parents Kenwood is from the late 60s I think, so has done 50 years so far. Hopefully yours will be as satisfactory!

MyOtherProfile · 12/11/2018 22:36

Fantastic!
