Looking for a piece of classical music

Definitely heard it in a BBC documentary about the war.

I'm not musical so excuse the following description- it's as if the piano keys are only being played one at a time, and then a strings instrument comes in.

Any ideas?!

Spiegel im spiegel by Avo Part?

peony2325 · 11/11/2018 20:20

I know this piece has been used in a BBC seris about WW2?

JockTamsonsBairns · 11/11/2018 20:28

Loveglee - very impressive!!

Spiegel im spiegel by Avo Part

I would also have gone for that from the description, and I can imagine it being used in that context too.

Loveglee · 11/11/2018 20:42

Thanks Jock! I guess there aren’t many pieces where the piano keys are played one at at time. Maybe in Einaudi’s music (yuck), but not often.

Yes, it's this! Thank you Flowers

Stuff like this is why the internet is great.

burgundypolkadots · 11/11/2018 21:06

It was too wordy and non-specific for Google to answer- MN to the rescue!

Oh that's beautiful! Place marking so that I can listen to it again, when I have the house to myself.

Hadn't thought of asking on MN (how could I have not!) but can anyone help me to track down a track with even fewer clues?! Heard on the radio (possibly 3, possibly Classic FM) whilst driving. I think it was on strings, but can't be sure. It was a succession of very very slow notes, each one held for an incredibly long time. It was incredibly calm but also had me waiting, almost breathlessly, wondering how long the note could go on, and what the next would be.

MortyVicar · 11/11/2018 21:22

I've just realised - I have no idea why and it's not something that matters - but it's Arvo Part, not Avo.

Notvery - not so easy to nail down, but maybe Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings?

Notverygrownup · 11/11/2018 21:37

Nope, that's lovely too, but too melodic, too fast. The notes were much much slower, each one held for I'm guessing 6 or 8 beats . . . .

WickedGoodDoge · 11/11/2018 22:26

@Notverygrownup Albinoni Adagio in G Minor? Strings and organ- very very slow (used to perform it and thought my bowing arm would fall off!)

Notverygrownup · 11/11/2018 22:43

Nope, too many notes. All the notes were loooong. And I think that there was only one instrument at a time, no harmonics.

I remember thinking that it would be a very impressive/totally exquisite/ elegant piece of music with which to start a funeral

AntiHop · 11/11/2018 22:55

@notverygrownup
Gorecki symphony number 3?

Notverygrownup · 11/11/2018 22:59

Ha! Just tried that via googling "the slowest piece of classical music". And no, it's not Cave's organ thingie either! The start of Arvo Part de Profundis has the right tempo but it wasnt a choral piece.

I was driving on the motorway, otherwise I would have pulled over and listened for the name. I'll let you know if I ever hear it again!

SmokeAndBone · 11/11/2018 23:16

@WickedGoodDoge
Omg that's the weirdest coincidence.
I am a funeral celebrant and am preparing for a ceremony this week. The family had chosen Albioni's Adagio, performed by Hauser.
I didn't know the piece, so had to YouTube.
It actually gave me goosebumps.
All credit to you if you can play something so beautiful - it must be a great comfort.

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 12/11/2018 00:02

Notverygrownup might it be the cello and piano movement from Messiaen’s quartet for the end of time? m.youtube.com/watch?v=SkwBEpSfuYg

LilyTheSavage · 12/11/2018 07:16

I also immediately thought of Spiegel Im Spiegel (I'm actually playing it in a concert next month).

Notverygrownup - if you know the date and time of the piece you heard you can look on the Classic FM website and they have playlists of everything that's been played and it is arranged in date/time order. Good luck.

AntiHop · 27/11/2018 20:50

@notverygrownup I want to know if you found the piece!
