What can I buy for nurses/staff?

Currently in hospital with my daughter who broke her arm and is in traction and has been since last Monday... the staff have been unreal and when (if) we ever get to go home I'd like to get them all something to show our gratitude. Biscuits? Sweets? Chocolate? Thanks!

When ds was discharged after his first admission we did a hamper of nice tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits

FadedRed · 11/11/2018 18:19

What Sirzy said and a letter, written on paper and sent to the CEO of the hospital trust saying what great care your child received.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2018 18:22

A card that mentions people by name is always appreciated as we can use it for revalidation evidence. Maybe make the nurses a cup of tea if they look busy. We ALWAYS appreciate that!!

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 11/11/2018 18:28

When DS was in for an op I left a big tin of Celebrations for all the staff on the ward and he wrote a thank you card.

ElspethFlashman · 11/11/2018 18:29

A card is always lovely. And a tin of something for sharing in the tea room.

Budgieinaberet · 11/11/2018 18:32

I had a young relative staying on a children's ward this summer. I took in a box of ice creams. It's too cold for that now Smile

Bagadverts · 11/11/2018 18:47

Unfortunately I've been in hospital quite a few times.
I sometimes take chocolates but sometimes fruit, always easy to grab and eat.

Last time I made sure I had something labelled to the night staff who had a particularly busy time in our bay. Other times I gave a gift to physio, or X-Ray team or the staff on the surgery recovery section.

(I don't mean anyone get every group a gift every time, just to think about some of the less obvious people if they played a special part in your stay)

bellsbuss · 11/11/2018 19:04

I did a hamper with different teas, coffee , biscuits , cakes , elderflower cordial and chocolates. I also did personal presents for his surgeon and key nurse, my child wouldn't be here today without the excellent treatment he received from the NHS and I am and always will be truly thankful.

FaithInfinity · 11/11/2018 20:57

Hamper with biscuits, sweets, tea and coffee always go down well. Also agree with cards with names on as that can be used as evidence for revalidation.

I’ve had a couple of grateful relatives when I did end of life care - had flowers a couple of times and one family bought me a pot to grow an iris. Kept the bowl as well after the flowers.

CountFosco · 11/11/2018 21:01

I had a friend who was a nurse and she said handcream was always appreciated because they wash their hands all the time.

Littlechocola · 11/11/2018 21:02

Biscuits or cakes are always welcome on our ward!
Also agree with pp who said a letter that can be used for revalidation.

dalmatianmad · 11/11/2018 21:03

Nice biscuits and a card with specificnames so staff can use as evidence for their revalidation 🤓

Orchardgreen · 11/11/2018 21:05

Sorry, but a big tin of Celebrations is crap and frankly patronising. Costs about £5 and ward staff have them coming out of their ears.
Nice biscuits or something savoury is better and more welcome.

WinterWonders · 11/11/2018 21:06

I second hand cream. I used to work in a hospital and my hands were so dry and sore from all the handwashing. I always recommend hand cream as a thank you gift, if asked. It will be much appreciated, but please don't feel obliged to get a gift.

FaithInfinity · 11/11/2018 21:06

Ooh and black pens!! We love a free pen Smile

Olderbyaminute · 11/11/2018 21:08

FaithInfinity Agree wholeheartedly nice black gel pens are great

Bilbobagins1234 · 11/11/2018 21:15

Pens are an excellent idea and the hand cream. A letter expressing your appreciation to the team plus copy to the director of nursing would be good for morale

goingatlast · 11/11/2018 21:23

I always give a few packs of the Green and Blacks mini bars of chocolate. They are individually wrapped little bars which I think are more hygenic. No sneezes, etc on them. I always feel a bit bleugh when I see a box of, say, milk tray sitting opened at the nurses station.

chickywoo · 11/11/2018 21:27

Anything edible is fine preferably chocolates/biscuits or sweets starburst skittles etc, or cakes/buns nothing healthy please - handcream nice but when you’ve not had a break and your knackered doesn’t give you the same boost as a few celebrations or heroes Wink agree with the Thankyou card and a letter to ward manager to say how fabulous we all are.

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 11/11/2018 21:32

On our ward we love a letter or card. If you want to give a present, the best one would be a box of nice fruit. We get more biscuits and chocolate than you would believe and it’s not good for us. Or some mini handcreams that can be shared out.

samatamfabahaba · 11/11/2018 21:39

Thank you all so much. I've been writing down the names of everyone and I was going to get a card but I'll write a letter too. Think I'll do a big hamper thing of everything you've all said, then I can cover everything. I'm so grateful, I've received some amazing support and my daughter is been well and truly looked after by everyone.

We would never say no to a tub of celebrations orchardgreenGrin
We recently had a giant bag (1000) of Yorkshire tea bags and a pack of teaspoons and mugs. That was very welcome, there are never enough teaspoons!
Anything edible and easy to grab in the staff room, biscuits, cakes, sweets, fruit.
But a hand written card is the best.
Hope your DD gets home soon Flowers

EleanorLavish · 11/11/2018 21:45

A nice jar of coffee, cups/mugs, biscuits.
A massive box of crisps (I can’t tell you how happy we were!)
A bag full of sachets of face masks, hand masks etc.
We appreciate everything.

NewYoiker · 11/11/2018 21:47

Best gift we've ever been given was a massive fruit hamper. Man it was beautiful and so nice!! Makes a nice change from biscuits and chocolate!

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 11/11/2018 22:03

A card which mentions staff members by name is really useful for revalidation!

Chocolate and biscuits always go down well!
