Payment etiquette: iWatch

I’ve just started to use my iWatch for contactless payments and finding it useful not having to dig my card out etc.
Only issue, is I’m not sure how to indicate that I want to pay this way. Normally with card they see you have a card and set up the card reader. But there have been a few awkward moments when paying with iWatch where they’ve told me the price and I’m waiting for the card reader but they’re just looking at me expectantly.
How do you do it?

I have an Apple Watch, I say ‘I’ll pay by contactless please’ whilst tapping my watch and nodding at the machine - never had an issue.

Hi I'm using contactless today please. Simple.

Thanks! I’m terrible with social cues 😣 I end up overthinking it, and then it turns into Mr Bean type farce.

I tend to just say 'contactless', sometimes with a questioning inflection is it's not obvious it's an option.

Oh, and that's after having one for over a year, I had various socially awkward blank looks and waving it at them incidents in the early days Blush

😀 Do you live outside London Frlrlrubert? I think it’s a factor in terms of how common the usage is?

I live in South Gower, so not always a non cash payment option. But, I interviewed with trendy new bank Monzo last week and I’m trying to get more used to ApplePay.

I'm outside London yes, still get the occasional 'ooo fancy' and 'that's clever' comments from shop staff who haven't seen one before if I'm in the sticks, but they are getting much more common.
