So you 'hear' texts and messages in the sender's voice?

Just that really. I mentioned it to a friend recently and she thought it really odd, but I always read/hear the sender's voice if that makes sense. I also read in the authors voice when reading an autobiography - Russell Brand's Booky wook would sound crap read by me.

So is it normal or not?

I'm with your friend. Your way sounds fun though!

JaiNotJay · 11/11/2018 12:08

It does kind of make sense, but I don't do this.

Yes OP I do this also when reading books I also visualise it like a movie. Thought it was just normal!!

Yes I do! If I don't know the voice of whoever wrote something it's just a general voice I hear. I thought everyone did.

If it's a text conversation going back and forth yes I do do that actually. If it's just a one off text say from DH asking me if he should bring milk or bread home then I don't.

Yes. Especially people with distinctive accents - I have a broad Scottish colleague and all his emails read as Scottish to me Hmm

I have had to train myself to do this with a family member, who writes exactly as they speak and with minimal punctuation. So we will be discussing plans for a family outing and I will receive a message which says ‘sure we can do something else’. I have to read it in their voice and work out from the context whether it means ‘Sure, we can do something else’ or ‘Are you sure? We can do something else.’

At the risk of sounding more stupid, if you don't read in people's voices, do you just hear words in your own voice? Obviously I don't (knowingly) know anyone here, but there is a generic mums net voice, a bit like a local newsreader type that I hear when I read your messages. Sometimes if a poster reminds me of a friend, then their voice is 'borrowed'.

If I know (of) the person, I sometimes hear the words in their voice. On MN, I hear the words in my own voice, unless there are obvious clues eg if the writer is using Scottish dialect then I hear it in a Scottish voice (possibly my Scottish colleague's).
