Terrible nightmares..what's going on?!

Why am I suddenly getting horrendous nightmares?!

Its like I'm trying to wake up and get out of it but I can't and it feels like my body isn't doing what my brain wants it to and I'm completely stuck and I'm trying to scream but I can't.... feel utterly batshit!

I'm so bloody scared to go to sleep, it's been going on for a few days now.
Has anyone else had this before? If so does it go away?

Diet change? That can do it for me. Gin also.

whenlifegetshard · 10/11/2018 21:16

Sorry to ask- but do you have any history of trauma? I’d get a GP visit booked to discuss with them

sevenwallflowers · 10/11/2018 21:18

Are you pregnant?

I also thought pregnant. I had the worst dreams when I was.

StorminaBcup · 10/11/2018 21:22

I started with horrific nightmares when I gave up smoking and started Nicorette gum. Have you started or stopped using any supplements or similar?

terriblenightmares · 10/11/2018 21:24

No diet change, not pregnant.

I really suffered after I gave birth to my eldest and had nightmares then but I kept reliving what happened at the hospital.

They weren't like these nightmares. Dc2 is 12 weeks old but my birth was a c section this time and extremely healing so it would be strange for that to be causing issues.

I'm feeling more stressed than usual due to my difficult relationship with my parents. Can stress really cause such bad nightmares?

Sounds like sleep paralysis to me.

Titsywoo · 10/11/2018 21:29

Yes i get periods of nightmares when anxious or stressed.

explodingkitten · 10/11/2018 21:31

Elevated heart rate or blood pressure? It always caused nightmares in my mum.

RainbowsArePretty · 10/11/2018 22:05

My nightmares are a sign of anxiety increasing so I would suggest it's linked to stress etc

olivesarelife · 10/11/2018 23:30

Are you awake or sure you're asleep whilst this happens. Another here saying sleep paralysis.

Polediv · 11/11/2018 00:38

Sounds like sleep paralysis. I used to suffer a few years ago, not so much anymore. Certainly anxiety induced in my experience.

Sleep paralysis are horrific experiences Flowers

Sleep paralysis - bloody terrifying. It's when you're essentially conscious but the part of your brain which paralyses you during sleep (which stops you acting out your dreams and possibly hurting yourself) is yet to switch off. It's often accompanied with a strong feeling of dread and trying to escape something.

I used to get it a lot.

Crinkle77 · 11/11/2018 14:02

Yep sleep paralysis. I have had it before. At first it was really bad and terrifying but once I understood what it was it became less terrifying. I still have it from time to time but it happens very rarely and isn't as bad these days.

Notquietrichenough · 11/11/2018 14:05

Have you had any other problems since the birth? Lost weight, sore wrists? I had thyroid problems after DS2 was born, and horrific nightmares were one of the main symptoms.

user1497863568 · 13/11/2018 23:41

Do you have any memory of the specifics of the dreams?

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 13/11/2018 23:47

Sorry to hear this OP.
Tricky relationship with parents, check.
Horriffic nightmares all my adult life and esp since I had kids, check.
What helped me: Falling in love with someone amazing and kind and talking it through in a safe space. Ie 'home made' therapy.

NotSoThinLizzy · 13/11/2018 23:56

I get this every night upto 6 times a night. It's really bad when I'm really tierd. I've learned that nothing can harm me and start off with wriggling my toes or fingers rather than my whole body to give my body time to wake up to react to my brain. Could just be hormones from birth.

zombiemum123 · 14/11/2018 00:11

Also sounds like sleep paralysis to me, iv heard it’s your brain waking up before it gives the signal to your body to wake up if that makes sense. Iv had it once and it was horrendous! Did a lot of research on it as it completely freaked me out, iv also heard that it’s linked to a lack of iron, vit b12 and vit d, this could counside with the crappy weather and as you have such a young baby it’s hard to feed your self good iron rich foods (iv been there)CakeFlowers
