Books you can't put down

There was a thread a couple of months ago but I can't find it now. I've bought and read a couple of the recommendations and am looking for more. I've always read a lot but much less so since having 2 small children, and am finally claiming some time back to do what I enjoy.

So, what can you recommend that will keep my interest?

Last 2 books were The handmaids tale, and The Hearts Invisible Furies.

Im not averse to something light and easy, I'm still training my brain to function again......

Books I genuinely couldn't put down:

A Thousand Splendid Suns
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves
Half of a Yellow Sun

I LOVED the hearts invisible Furies. Some of it a bit far fetched and didn't like the real life characters making an appearance. But the dialogue was written superbly which made up for it.

No other recommendations. Trying to find my next read too.

Just realised I've also got The Underground Railroad, might be worth a look @RCOR?

The Underground Railroad is good. I loved The Bees by Laline Paull. The Wayfarer trilogy is good too.

Biancadelriosback · 10/11/2018 21:21

Anything by Linwood Barclay. Especially No Time For Goodbye.

RCOR · 10/11/2018 21:43

Thanks for the recommendation @nottalotta. Fingers crossed I can download a copy via my library ebooks.

Bloodybridget · 10/11/2018 21:47

I'm over half way through Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, it's riveting now although the second section was a bit dull. Can't wait to see how it ends.

fridaynightpasta · 10/11/2018 21:50

A Man Called Ove. It's been a long time since I loved a book so much.

iklboo · 10/11/2018 21:51

American Gods. Every time I've read it. And that's at least seven times.

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/11/2018 22:27

Thanks, some suggestions I've never heard of and quite a variety I think! I'm sure I've read the Linwood Barclay some years ago.

The One by John Marr, phenomenonal book.

Myneighbourisodd · 10/11/2018 23:21

Room
One of the best books I've ever read, one of them that you simply want to keep reading

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/11/2018 23:37

I've read Room, in about 2 days (pre children....)

Nobody Told Me by Hollie McNish. It's fantastic.

Bombaybunty · 10/11/2018 23:39

The Goldfinch, absolutely loved it.
I read Room and didn't like it at all.

ScreamingValenta · 10/11/2018 23:40

I recently enjoyed The Well by Catherine Chanter.

IJustLostTheGame · 11/11/2018 00:15

Eleanor Oliphant is absolutely fine
The blind assassin
I'll eat when I'm dead
Anything written by Mrs gaskell, although Cranford reduced me to tears.
Alias grace
Suicide club
The pillars of the earth
Gone with the wind
Les miserables
It's a dirty business getting clean

Mammamooch · 11/11/2018 00:18

Three things about Elsie - Joanna Cannon

NoShitHemlock · 11/11/2018 00:29

When "A Discovery of Witches" started on Sky One, I watched the first episode and decided to buy the trilogy by Deborah Harkness.

Read all 3 within a week (so kind of spoiled the series for myself!), but absolutely unputdownable!

panticus · 11/11/2018 03:41

Station Eleven
The Goldfinch
Gone with the Wind
The Heart's Invisible Furies
Gone Girl
The Fair Fight
Brother of the More Famous Jack
The Last Painting of Sara de Vos
Life After Life
My Notorious Life by Madame X

Xiaoxiong · 11/11/2018 14:51

Any John Le Carré. Just in the middle of Little Drummer Girl because it's on the BBC right now and it's brilliant.

HearMeSnore · 11/11/2018 14:57

The last book I couldn't put down was The Martian. It ticked all my boxes - a likeable main character to root for, a compelling, (mostly) believable plot with the right balance of peril and pathos, and humour. It's way better than the film.

MalcolmsBrokenWalrusMoneybox · 11/11/2018 17:17

Mortal engines, read it in one day & already really annoyed at the dis-uglifying of one of the main characters in the film. FFS. What about Jonah Hex?!

It is a completely bonkers premise, amazing writing.

Shoxfordian · 11/11/2018 17:20

Hunger games
The seven deaths of Evelyn hardcastle
The shadow of the wind
