Lotions / potions for newborn? What to add to my shopping list!

I'm just preparing my shopping list for the last few bits for my baby due shortly.

I've got sudocream, nappies and wipes but what about washes & creams etc? What do I need to buy?

Water. Use nothing but water to top and tail a newborn.

Ohyesiam · 10/11/2018 19:13

I wanted a nature baby, so didn’t use anything, babies are pretty clean, and warm water does it well.

ButterflyWitch · 10/11/2018 19:13

^what Wolfie said. All you need is some cream for nappy rash

Olive oil for baby massage?

Orangedaisy · 10/11/2018 19:14

Vaseline in case they have dry/cracked skin. Other than that just plain warm water.

MrsL2016 · 10/11/2018 19:15

I second PP that just water is sufficient for a newborn. My midwife recommended Rapeseed Oil for my DS's really dry skin after birth. Worked wonders and they use it in the baby massage classes. We now use child's farm baby wash and it is really gentle and goes a long way. Still on our first bottle, used about half in 6 months.

You don’t really need anything. I have a whole cupboard full of stuff as people gave us loads of baby toiletries as gifts, we’ve hardly used any and she’s six weeks now. We do use a baby soap when she shits all over herself though.

E20mom · 10/11/2018 19:16

My baby had dry skin when she was born and the GP and HV both told me to use coconut oil on it. I got a tiny pot from Holland &Barrett and it worked brilliantly.

E20mom · 10/11/2018 19:16

Also used it for general baby massage

Worriedworry · 10/11/2018 19:41

Coconut oil for flaky skin? That's all really. Newborns smell amazing without any added perfumes.

Carbivorous · 10/11/2018 19:42

Nothing!

Howhot · 10/11/2018 19:43

Nothing at all op

EleanorLavish · 10/11/2018 19:44

Only ever use Baby Oil (or olive oil etc) to remove barrier creams like Sudocrem or Metanium. Never use wipes or water.

DevonCherry · 10/11/2018 19:48

H2O is all you need!

EwItsAHooman · 10/11/2018 19:48

Metanium in case of nappy rash, it's in a yellow box/tube and a tiny bit goes a long way but it's amazing on sore bums and bits.

Saline drops or spray. Sometimes babies noses get a bit dried up and crusty and it can affect them feeding, DD was terrible for this and then wouldn't latch properly as she couldn't breathe through her nose. A quick squirt of saline spray pre-feed sorted her out.

If you're planning to BF then some Lansinoh cream for you.

A mild baby shampoo, Child's Farm is good. All of my babies had full heads of thick hair and plain old water didn't cut it when it came to washing out sick, pee, or poop (yes, they did sometimes do an up the back exploding nappy so bad that it caught the back of their hair!).

IncomingCannonFire · 10/11/2018 19:54

I use aveeno baby shampoo after they started on solids but just water to start. Dc2 I used normal wet wipes after a few days. Sudocreme for nappy rash.
Coconut oil cleared up dc2 cradle cap easily too.
Do not use talcum powder (Google the risks).
Cotton wool and nappies.
Consider washable nappies and wipes?
Congratulations.

Fab - thanks everyone! That will save some pennies Smile

Don’t buy olive oil for baby. Olaeic acid in the oil can aggregate their skin.
