Are you in your late 40s & very stiff & achy?

I just want to know how common my experience is? I'm occasionally stiff these days getting up if I've been sitting in one position for a little while. And I have a fair bit of body pain around the lower back/pelvis. It just feels like I'm seizing up. I've no idea about where I am regards Menopause as I've had a hysterectomy years ago but kept my ovaries. If I had to guess, I'd say I have maybe the hormones left from 2/3 tiny periods a year. I don't think I'm totally meno yet. Does anyone else feel they're seizing up & what if anything are you doing about it? I'm considering HRT.

45, on HRT and am starting to ache. Lower back, collar bone, shoulder............. I know I need to start yoga again...............

Crocky · 10/11/2018 21:24

48 and a couple of months ago this was me. I have osteoporosis arthritis in my neck but was feeling old and stiff all over and was putting on weight for the first time. I started running three times a week and doing yoga. Am just starting to feel the benefit. I almost bounce up the stairs now instead of dragging myself up

Crocky · 10/11/2018 21:24

That’s supposed to be osteo arthritis!!

pilates Grin

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/11/2018 21:27

Regular Pilates is apparently the cure boring as fuck but works.

Basically though keeping the joints supple and strong. Muscles begin to atrophy more quickly after 40 so need more exercise to keep strong.

I developed a type of cfs due to a range of things and the stiffness was appalling. Pregnancy did help a lot and Pilates is helping my main area, si joint and lower back. If I do too much sitting without maintaining my range of movement I can start to stiffen up horribly in a couple of weeks. Only 41!

I read today ubiquinol can help too. Expensive though

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/11/2018 21:28

(Apologies Pilates I'm sure you're great fun!)

Grin to oof and grimace

I’ll have a read up about manganese!!

CS12345 · 10/11/2018 21:51

Pilates is fantastic. Works a treat but like everything, you've gotta keep it up!

StillMedusa · 10/11/2018 22:00

50 here and have been getting increasingly stiff and sore even though I am in an active job . Everything hurts when I wake .
Regular sessions with my osteopath have helped SO much..I have a lot of moving and handling at work with disabled children and it has taken its toll.

I now go to the gym 3 times a week as well. I don't enjoy it but it definitely helps to keep me as mobile and supple as possible. I think after 40 you have to actively work at keeping fitter or it all goes to pot!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/11/2018 22:01

I find swimming sorts it out. And not drinking. Failed at both of those today 🙄

icouldbewrongicouldberight · 10/11/2018 22:06

I ache if I stand still for too long. Everything else is fine apart from if I sit with my legs under me for too long. Peri menopausal and old here.

woman11017 · 10/11/2018 22:06

I recommend Tai Chi.

Doesn't suit everyone, but I thought I'd chuck it in. Gentle, slow, but surprisingly strong exercise, good for muscle tone and strength, but it's also good for your insides.
AugustRose · 10/11/2018 22:29

I'm 44 and over the last few months have been getting more and more stiff and achy, I do yoga but it doesn't seem to help at the moment. It is basically from the neck down but my shoulders are the worst, even hanging washing up makes me feel exhausted.

I know I am not eating well or exercising enough at the minute so I am hoping it will pass, especially as my sister has arthritis and fibromyalgia and hope it's not the start for me too.

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 10/11/2018 22:33

I do the Les Mills Body Balance class about 3 times a week. It's a mixture of tai chi yoga and Pilates to music. I really find it helps (I'm 48 and was getting stiff and thickening around the middle)

LoniceraJaponica · 10/11/2018 22:40

Pilates
I'm 60 and don't have these aches and pains.

woman11017 · 10/11/2018 22:43

A little thing that was recommended to me once was to try and walk for 5 minutes outside everyday. It helped then, and I started walking more and more. Little things can help.
Hope it eases up OP and it gets sorted. Flowers

Beansandcoffee · 10/11/2018 22:54

Hands in particular - solved by going on HRT.
Back in the morning - solved by Pilates.
Middle age spread - jogging helps but still can’t stop body changing shape because of age. I refuse to wear beige trousers yet.

QOD · 10/11/2018 23:47

I’m 49
Osteoarthritis in right knee and right big toe and left shoulder and lower spine.
If I sit for more than an hour I walk like I’ve shit myself
But once I get moving I’m ok
Had 3 tendons reattached about 3 year ago in left shoulder and just can’t kick myself up the arse to regain fitness

QOD · 10/11/2018 23:50

I should add that I have hyper mobility and find Pilates and yoga ridiculously easy and therefore wake up like I’ve been run over by a bus after doing either

GrabbyMcGrabby · 10/11/2018 23:58

What about elasicated waistbands @Beansandcoffee ?

I recommend Wine and Gin. Honest. Really helps balance those hormones.Blush

CS12345 · 11/11/2018 00:20

QOD - how does hypermobility help you with Pilates, when it's all about core strength?

Letsgetreadytorumba · 11/11/2018 00:23

I’m early 30s, menopausal and my knees are so stiff these days Sad

Weetabixandshreddies · 11/11/2018 00:37

CS12345
I have hypermobility syndrome and do pilates. A lot of the exercises still involve moving the joints so bending forwards, twisting, bridges, bending forward over outstretched legs, arm exercises etc.

I have to try very hard not to hyper extend my joints or "show off" as my physio puts it. But it's very hard when you don't know what is the safe range and it's easy to injure yourself.

I can easily bend at the hips and rest my forearms on the floor or sit with legs outstretched and rest my head on my knees. Doesn't mean it's good to do it though.

EscapeToTheMoon · 11/11/2018 07:24

Yep. 44 and for the last year my lower back pain gets worse. It aches in the morning and i grunt putting my socks on😂

NeurotrashWarrior · 11/11/2018 07:32

I need to add that I'm very hypermobile and it became a problem/ worse after pregnancy. I've been very careful after this second pregnancy and have to be very aware of posture and core strength.

Yoga (although I love it and some types that focus on strength and core are good) isn't brilliant for everyone.

Katy Bowman is also really good at talking about correct positions and not over stretching joints etc.
