If the police traced something to your house and everyone denied it, would you think someone in your house was lying?

If so, how do you get to the bottom of it?

A telephone call via Skype got traced to our house, was to a helpline about suicide. The police turned up, after clearing things up, they left.

We have 3 daughters, none fitting the same age/name as the person on the phone, all denying any knowledge. All at home and all fine.

2 of our daughters are closer to the age of the apparent girl on the phone, so I can only assume it was one of them, but it seems really odd. If it was one, it was a prank call... seems like something they wouldn't dream of doing.

The police actually said although highly unlikely, the IP may have been copied down wrong, but really did stress how unlikely that was.

I don't know what to think.

I'm just bumping this, in a hope that someone has some advice.

If your going to make a prank call it isn't something you usually do alone - were any friends round?

Andro · 10/11/2018 15:37

If no-one was wanting to admit it, I might suspect that someone was looking for advice based on concerns for a friend. I would also check my router security in case someone was piggybacking on my wifi.

Borderterrierpuppy · 10/11/2018 15:37

I would probably ask to check their devices.
If it was a prank it needs highlighting and if it was a cry for help you need to know which one it was and act accordingly.
If they have skype I think you should be able to see the call. HTH

I'd assume it was someone in the house, and I wouldn't assume it was a prank.

As no one is saying it is them, perhaps letting each of them know they can talk to you about anything at any time, if they're struggling you'll support them in getting help. That way you're not accusing anyone, but you're giving them options if they are secretly in distress.

Sensitive subject, would not be surprising if the caller gave false details. Don't know what you can do apart from sitting them down and saying if it was one of them, if they have any problems they can talk to you (or insert name of other responsible adult).

^So would I

SilverPoppy · 10/11/2018 15:42

The only reason I'm saying it would have to have been a prank is due to the nature of the call (saying they had taken specific tablets). Obviously none of my daughters did.

I did wonder about the WiFi being used by someone else? But it just seems a bit unlikely.

I have spoken to all 3 of them and they all deny it, none coming across like they are lying, which has made it incredibly difficult.

I guess the only thing I can do is say I'm here for them, but I really hate leaving at that. Not knowing who it was, if it was a prank, if it wasn't, etc.

None had friends around that day, I didn't even realise they had a Skype to be honest, although it had been downloaded on the App Store (on a different day) I wouldn't have a clue what login they used, as I was unaware of them even having it and they all say they don't.

All you can probably do now is, calmly, tell them that this whole experience has been very worrying for you as you love them all and that if they do need to talk you will listen, or that they need to be more honest with any helpline they call in the future.

Then give them a hug and leave it!

It could be,as the police say, an error, or a practical joke gone wrong. You may never know.

I wish you well managing to put that to the back of your mind!

CommunistLegoBloc · 10/11/2018 16:38

Surely if the app has been downloaded from your AppStore, and they are all denying that they even have it, then this proves one of them is lying. If they’re lying about downloading the app, then obviously they’ll be doing so to conceal the truth about using it.

Hope you get to the bottom of it Flowers

Is a neighbour using your WiFi?
