Airport with an 18 month old

Pram, baby carrier or let him walk?

What do I do about the airport. I have a pram at my destination so would rather not take one with me. I find it more hassle to put up and down at the gate and stresses me.

He's getting a bit big for the baby carrier I have. Are there good ones reasonably priced that I could put him in? Should I buy one or let him walk (run riot) then carry him when he's tired? I'll have one small bag with me to keep my arms free.

Any help greatly appreciated!

I need one of those cases with a baby seat attached!

Shamelessly bumping this. Maybe I should have picked another topic?

We always took our lightweight pushchair, I found that much easier especially when you may have hand bags etc. I always hang it on the pushchair.

Tbh you only need to open and close it at departure gate and security, I find it easier that then running after a very active young one x

Sorry re read it, there's those backpack carriers... No idea what they're called but our friends have one that they use for long walks etc?

Orangedaisy · 10/11/2018 19:08

Pushchair. Definitely. What if flight is delayed? If you have nowhere to put them then you’re looking at misery all round.

pumpkinpie01 · 10/11/2018 19:11

I have flown with an 18 month old , definitely a buggy a tired toddler running around an airport whilst you are juggling bags is not a good start to a holiday !

SoyDora · 10/11/2018 19:13

Mine walked at that age. We did once get delayed for 3 hours when DD1 was 17 months, then we were diverted to another country, and I was also 7 months pregnant, but it was fine! There are plenty of chairs in the airport.

Irlolga · 10/11/2018 19:20

I'd opt for sling, especially because you have a buggy at destination. Instead of buying one just for the trip why not just hire one form your local sling library

LauraPalmersBodybag · 10/11/2018 19:24

What carrier do you have @gardencarrot?

Cachailleacha · 10/11/2018 19:27

Simple ring sling to support him on your hip or back.

PatriciaHolm · 10/11/2018 19:31

Having spent too much of my life in airports, I think you might have forgotten just how far you end up walking! You'll end up carrying him for ages; I would go for a really cheap umbrella fold stroller that takes 2 seconds to fold and goes on the plane with you.

driveninsanebythehubby · 12/11/2018 06:33

I agree about the cheap and cheerful lightweight stroller. If you don't already have one, it's something you will need in the future anyway! Just check there's no issue with taking it on the plane - or ask in advance if there's anywhere to store it at the airport til you get home.

noenergy · 12/11/2018 06:58

Airports mean long long walks. And delays.
I was wishing I had taken one for my small 4 year old when we were away over half term as she was exhausted, we had to change flights.

Definitely take a cheap umbrella stroller. If flying from Gatwick you don't need to fold it to get through security.

HotInWinter · 12/11/2018 10:47

One aeroplane or 2?
If 2, you need a sling - you won't get yours back for the transfer necessarily.

We hired a sling from our sling library - they were amazing, and even posted it to us as I couldn't get there. Highly recommended if it will be a one off.

Otherwise, I carried my 2 year old in a connecta. And could manage the petit 4 year old in it.

I'd go for walking and a sling (and a rucksack, not a bag for hand luggage). The more walking they do, the better!

Cachailleacha · 12/11/2018 15:38

If you don't already have one, it's something you will need in the future anyway! I used one between age one and two, but it was my only pram or stroller. Didn't need it after two as my child had stopped napping.

purplecorkheart · 12/11/2018 15:43

A lightweight pushchair. Ask around friends and family if they have one. Otherwise keep an eye on ebay, argos etc

BendingSpoons · 12/11/2018 15:47

Some airports have buggy things you can borrow. I saw them at Gatwick. You can then take it to the gate if you want or ditch it/don't pick it up if not needed.

Knitwit101 · 12/11/2018 15:49

Do you think he would sit on a Trunki suitcase and you could pull him around? Although that is another piece of kit you might have to buy if you don't have one already.

gardencarrot · 13/11/2018 09:06

Thanks all for your help. It's just one short flight and we have flown loads of times together it's just now he's getting bigger and might not go in the baby carrier. I bought a pram to keep at the destination to save the hassle of taking it with me. At the arrival airport you don't get your pram back until you are at luggage pick up and it's quite a walk so it's pointless taking the pram anyway as that is the bit I would really want it for.

He is still the right weight for the baby carrier I have, I'm quite surprised. So going to take that and stick him in if he needs it but otherwise I'll let him walk. Thanks for all the suggestions

gardencarrot · 13/11/2018 09:08

Oh and thanks I like the idea of the trunk I but don't think he would sit on it and it's a bit unstable for all the size of him. They just need to invent something similar for younger babies!!

The loan of the pram things at Gatwick sound ideal! Sadly I'm not at that airport

I saw a seat that straps onto a suitcase. Has anyone tried one? Alternatively a cushion on top of a case and legs each side of the handles like riding a broomstick!

Shuggas · 13/11/2018 09:12

Another vote for a sling ring, very simple to use, you have the option of walk or wear, and it takes the strain off you, try looking up a local sling library, you can rent them and try different slings, and get great advice too Smile
