Plagued by calls from "BT Technical Dept"

mrsoutnumbered · 10/11/2018 08:59

Every. Single. Day.

I've told them to stop calling me, I know they're a scam, I don't have a BT line. But they keep on calling.

Is there any way to stop the arseholes from calling me or do I have to change my number?

I was woken up at 7.50 this morning by a scam call. No one on the line. Looked up the number and it was microsoft scam. Not happy.

LookImAHooman · 10/11/2018 09:11

We had this for months. We had caller display and started only answering numbers we absolutely, definitely knew. After a good while, the phishing calls did all stop. Could be wrong but IIRC if you pick up, it confirms to scammers that the number is live so worth persuing.

Roystonv · 10/11/2018 09:28

Just had this with 'talk talk', told them we were on the tps and to stop calling, reported to TT giving them the number they were ringing from and blocked the number. Stopped now - must have moved on to bt customers now!

Roystonv · 10/11/2018 09:29

Btw we never have scam calls so wondering why we are being targeted now??

PoptartPoptart · 10/11/2018 09:32

I had this a while ago.
In the end I went along with it, letting them talk, pretending I was doing what they were asking, which was logging into my account, changing the password, etc. At the end I told them that I had recorded the conversation (I hadn’t) and that they’d been on the phone for a sufficient amount of time for the call to be traced and that I was contacting the police. They hung up.
Might be a fluke but they’ve never called again.

InfantaSybilla · 10/11/2018 09:33

Don't answer unknown callers. There's no point scammers calling dead numbers so they'll give up and your number won't be circulated as a live number to call

goingtotown · 10/11/2018 09:35

Talk Talk gave me 14258 to block the last caller from my landline.

bookmum08 · 10/11/2018 09:35

Is that the ones with the annoying computerised California accent? I just hang up. I used to have an answer machine so I can screen calls. It broke and I keep meaning to get a new one. I always just hang up on these calls or say something like "Whatever. Bye" then hang up.
Very annoying though.

UpstartCrow · 10/11/2018 09:35

If its on your landline, you can report them as nuisance calls to your provider and ask them to block incoming international calls for 3 months.

ElideLochan · 10/11/2018 09:37

We keep them on the line as long as possible, if they're wasting time with me, then they're not talking to someone who might actually get scammed

bookmum08 · 10/11/2018 09:51

I hear of people who hand over the phone to their chatty toddler which means the person on the other end needs to hang up or listen too "I like cheese. Cheese is good. Except on Thursday when I like Apples. Do you like Cheese. My Granny has a car. Do you have a car? My cat is a cat". (That would actually be spoken in one long sentence with no pauses for breath)

JellySlice · 10/11/2018 09:54

I can't block international calls, as I have family abroad. So whenever I get a call that displays 'international' (or any other non-numerical display) I pick up but do not speak. If it's a real call, they will say my name, I will recognise their voice, and most of them know I do this. If it's a cold call they give up and hang up. Since I've been doing this I get fewer cold calls. I think it's because my number does not get marked as 'live'. Even if the coldcaller gets nothing out of you, they sell your number on if you answer.

Footle · 10/11/2018 11:24

If you don't pick up 'caller unknown ' numbers around here, you risk losing communication with the NHS about hospital appointments, CBT practitioner, etc.

Darkestnight · 10/11/2018 11:41

Look up kitboga on twitch.tv he makes a living waisting these scammers time.. Its a good laugh when he uses he's alias eg Edna a old lady.

Bananalanacake · 10/11/2018 11:50

My friend's teenage daughter is being bullied. She passes the phone to her dd who gives the cold caller a graphic description of how she fantasies about her bully being beaten to death. This is the time wasting tactic. She doesn't let them get a word in.

Footle · 10/11/2018 12:16

Bananacake, it's not clear who the 'she' is in your post, but that's a pretty unpleasant way of dealing with the problem.

citiesofbismuth · 10/11/2018 13:10

I took a pair of scissors to our phone line. I couldn't reach to unplug, as the socket is behind a cabinet.

Orchardgreen · 10/11/2018 13:13

You need a truecall blocker.

Got one for my mum who was scammed a couple of times.

I have one too, it’s great

Bananalanacake · 10/11/2018 13:40

Sorry, the 'she' is my friend, who then gives the phone to her teenage DD to rant at the cold caller, she (the DD) tells the CC how she wants her bully to be beaten up, I know it's an unpleasant subject but it makes the DD feel better and the CC wastes time as they can't speak, it's the same as the toddler chat technique but with a darker turn.

mrsoutnumbered · 10/11/2018 13:42

Yeah I think I might give virgin a call and see if they can block international calls. Bloody annoying!

Get a call blocker phone..best bit of money spent

Ezzie29 · 10/11/2018 15:38

We used to get loads of cold calls until we got in the habit of checking caller ID before picking up and not picking up if it was unknown or an English number (we’re in the Channel Islands) and now we never get them.
