Help - how can I get rid of the smell

FIL has been staying with us and I have finally worked out what the horrible smell is. He has been spraying lavender Febreze all over the spare bedroom.
How can I get rid of the smell? It’s making me feel ill
Obviously I am washing everything possible

Just wash everything and if it's still lingering, use a carpet cleaner too. If you have a fabric headboard then a tiny bit of Milton in warm water wiped over the headboard with a cloth will help. Otherwise, open the window whenever you're at home and get some fresh air in. If you have a lot of bicarbonate of soda then place some pots of it here and there, that always works well. Failing that, vinegar in a bowl will also absorb smells.

I don't think Febreeze is designed to last a long time, so it should fade fairly quickly. I don't blame you for feeling ill though, those things are horrible!

It does rather beg the question... what horrible smells was he trying to cover up by using the Febreze?

Count your lucky stars, it could have been a lot worse Grin

That stuff takes forever to wash out. You have my sympathy.

I'd love to know why he travels with Febreze!

Just open the windows and let it air. I can think of worse calling cards to be left with, a whiff of synthetic lavender is not that bad.

open the windows.
hoover
wash bedding

Wash everything on the hottest wash possible. Dry it outside if you can. Open all the windows and doors for a good airing. Put a pot of bicarb in every room, or an onion chopped in half (they absorb smells, but then your home will smell like onions).

Ground coffee (dried unused) will take away even the smell of fire and smoke, just leave in shallow dishes around the room. Will go very quickly.

Thanks, I’m going to try everything at once
Turns out he mistook Febreze for body spray (how) and has been spraying himself 😁
