I've just been offered a job as a trainee pharmacy advisor - really chuffed!

I'm awaiting an email with more information about start date etc.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to shed any light on their uniform policy for me? Mainly concerned about covering my arms as I have some tattoos (nothing offensive) and several scars. I have heard that you're not allowed to wear a cardigan or anything over your tunic?

I'm excited to start my training so any other useful information or tips you have would be welcome too Grin

You'll either have to wear a long sleeved top or cover with bandages. Depending on your manager!

Shampoop · 09/11/2018 10:35

Do you mean because of the tattoos or the scars?

Happy to wear something long sleeved if that's their policy but the tunics are short sleeved and I read somewhere else that you're not allowed to wear anything over it? I don't think bandages is a practical solution for covering both arms all the time.

For the tattoos..you can get long sleeved tunics as well but they are a bit crap at providing uniform!

I don't mind if they're crap at providing uniform, wearing something smart of my own would probably be easier Grin

I'd be most comfortable wearing a smart cardigan over a normal short sleeved Tunic (i get quite hot and uncomfortable so cardigan is easy to slip on and off when not on shop floor), do you know if this might be allowed?

Scars will fade soon enough so leas concerned aboyt those in the long term.

It really does depend on your manager re the cardigan. We can at our store but it does get very cold! I would just check with your line manager as they don't all stick the rules in the handbook. Good luck in your new role!

I used to work there, we weren’t allowed to wear our own plain cardigans over the tunic. Some people had the Boots branded fleece-type jackets to wear over the top, though. Sounds like it’s shop specific, so I would just ask!

Congratulations on your new job!

If there's a boots version I'd be happy with that! Thankyou!

I suppose I wont have a uniform right away anyway so I can judge what other people are wearing when I start. It's good to know that long sleeves of some description are allowed all the same even if it has to be a tunic.

I would have assumed there'd be a long sleeve policy for employees who cover their arms for religious reasons. I know that's not the case for you, but long sleeves of some kind must be a very common request. I'd recommend a navy blue long sleeve t-shirt under the short sleeve tunic. Depending on what your scars a from, even faded scars can be very noticeable.

thelionessqueen · 09/11/2018 20:52

First congratulations on your job !!! When they ask your uniform sizes requirements ask for a long sleeved tunic ...if you get cold in winter you can wear a white vest underneath ....

Bananasinpjs123 · 09/11/2018 20:59

You can buy detachable sleeves. I will find a link and then you can wear your tunic and wear the sleeves so it looks like a top underneath

POPholditdown · 09/11/2018 20:59

When I worked there we weren’t allowed to wear our own cardigans and the only staff allowed long sleeved uniform/jackets were the ones who were permanently on the ‘cold’ till, or working at the warehouse entrance. If anyone was just covering that area you had to borrow or deal with it.

They do expect tattoos to be covered. A couple of colleagues had them on their wrists and they had to cover them with plasters. By the time I left they had become very strict with jewellery and watches etc (iirc it was one ring on each hand max, watches with only black or brown straps that sort of thing) Not sure how far they got with enforcing, though!

Good luck with your new job.

canyouhearthedrums · 09/11/2018 21:09

What's the rationale behind not being allowed long sleeves? It's not as if you are in a c linical setting.

Shampoop · 09/11/2018 23:05

Thanks for those links Bananas! Those look like they might be an option.

Most of my scars are old and faded white and I don't bother covering those but I have some very recent ones that I'd prefer to keep covered until they are faded. I need to cover my tattoos anyway so looks like long sleeves will be essential.

I thought I'd have had an email confirming everything by now but I'm still waiting, even though my online application status says "under offer".

Just some feedback on the link to those sleeves. I have actually bought them, in 4 colours! I have massive bingo wings as lost a lot of weight.

These sleeves don't wear very well under a top. They are a great alternative to a cardi, but the back comes up too high along the neck to comfortably sit underneath most tops. I was trying to wear them with shift dresses and sleeveless office workwear.

Bananasinpjs123 · 10/11/2018 23:08

Ah fair enough. What about the ones that just pull up over your arm?
