When to do something about child with constipation

Ds5 was in hospital last Wednesday for 24hours after the gp was concerned about meningitis. He had a rash, vomited once and a high temp. After tests, he was diagnosed with a bad virus and discharged.

Since then, he has only done rabbit dropping type poo, little bits at a time. He isn't in pain and his mood is normal and he is as happy as Larry. He is eating less than normal, usually he has hollow legs!

How long should I wait? He's having plenty to drink and some fruit.

Thanks

I’d say you need to get him started on something sooner rather than later. Maybe lactulose which can be bought over the counter.

I second lactulose. Brilliant stuff when my little baby was only 3 months and was very poorly with constipation.

I've been told kiwis are very good at shifting things.

Definitely sooner rather than later. If you leave it they can become impacted.

Pears are good and avoid bananas at all costs - the potassium in them causes constipation, as does protein.

Will he eat nuts? Pistachios are good

Spinach, celeriac, prunes, dark chocolate

Please try and deal with it asap as left or delayed it could get much nastier.

DS has been on Laxido for 2 years because it backed up so badly, we the disimpaction process and last resort would have been surgery.

I have a child with chronic constipation lactulose can help but its only a softener go back to the gp and see if they will prescribe movicol.

Pastaagain78 · 08/11/2018 20:41

Now. The sooner it’s treated the better.

Dittydotty · 08/11/2018 21:51

Just to advise you OP that Movicol and Laxido have the same generic ingredient.

AamdC, my child has it as a chronic condition too, it’s horrible seeing them
in so much pain if they miss a dose isn’t it? Sad

It is Dotty unfortunately my son refuses oral medication as he has autism and learning disabillities so i give him bisocodyl suppositories as beleive it oe nor its easier than trying to get medicine down him .
