Universal credit interview help

Bananasinpjs123 · 08/11/2018 16:26

Hi everyone. I wandered if I could ask some advice. I have my first universal credit interview tomorrow and I'm taking my ID etc. Can anyone advise me on what happens at the interview and what they ask. These things make me nervous and I want to be prepared and not look like a fool Blush. Thanks

Bumping for you.

tinytemper66 · 08/11/2018 20:09

Take any qualification certificates too. Plus a CV.

Bananasinpjs123 · 08/11/2018 20:09

A cv? Really? I do have a job but it's part time due to having 3 kids under 6

The guy on the phone said just ID and proof of income and address. Then I logged online to my UC account to see I need proof I pay my rent. Then I saw on citizens advice I need a cv and to bring kids birth certificates too. Do they not tell you everything on purpose...?

They'll verify your ID and bank details. If your in private rental then they'll attempt to verify it too. That's all. Depending on your circumstances you'll have a commitments meeting on another day. If this is suitable you'll have a prepare for commitments to do which you can complete and upload your cv to

MsFrosty · 08/11/2018 21:02

Don't take a cv it's not needed. If your in social housing you won't need your tenancy.
If you're claiming child benefit for the kids then you don't need to take birth certificates

lashy · 08/11/2018 21:47

This may be long, but it's worth reading:-
Initial Evidence appointment:-
If you've said you can provide appropriate 'physical' evidence; go prepared (if you require an 'Advance' Payment, it cannot be issued until your ID has been successfully verified)...
Take with you:-
ONE of the following (Primary ID):-
Valid passport or valid Photocard Drivers Licence or the Bank card for the account you've already requested to be paid into (it must show the bank a/c number on the front of the card [one or two banks don't, but the vast majority do]).
Plus
TWO of the following (Secondary ID):-
Council Tax Statement for current year (for current address) or
Birth Cert or
Marriage cert or
NHS Medical Card (it should have your current address on it) or
Bank Statement (matching the account you've requested payment into - must be less than one month old and show current address).
Valid passport (as long as you haven't used it for Primary ID).
Valid drivers licence (as long as you haven't used it for Primary ID).
Bank card for the account you've requested payment into (again, as long as you didn't use it for your Primary ID).
_

For Private Rented Sector (PRS) housing:-
You will need to provide an up-to-date Tenancy Agreement AND proof of residency (i.e. a utility bill, Council Tax letter etc. less than one month old, in your name, at current address).
You cannot be paid Housing Element until your Housing Costs have been verified (sadly this is where people can end up in arrears - when they don't provide the required evidence quickly / before their first payment is due).

Because the service is Digital; you may be asked to upload your CV to your online account (rather than bring in a paper copy) - your Work Coach should advise you how to do this. This would typically be asked at your First Commitments appointment, rather than at the Initial Evidence appointment however.

Your Work Coach would talk to you about preparing for / being available for work - how available, depends on if you are a lone parent / primary carer for your children and the ages of your children.
Other personal circumstances may also impact on this.

  • If you have declared any health conditions and have a Fit Note (aka a sick note), take it with you.
  • If you have a smart phone, take it with you and make sure it has a reasonable charge on it - in case you need to amend anything on your online account - they'll support you (if necessary), to do this while you're in the office.

Turn up on time (5 mins early is a good idea, but no more is necessary).
Check in at the reception area - make sure they know you are there for an 'Initial Evidence' appointment.

Sometimes you may be asked if you're able to stay for the First Commitments appointment immediately after the ID appointment (rather than have to return a few days later) - you would then meet your Work Coach at that appointment (and talk about CV's, skills you have, health conditions, training opportunities and discuss support required to help you into work / increase your hours if already working part-time etc).

If you are taking a child / children with you, take a snack / drink / something to alleviate boredom and make sure they've visited the loo before you arrive, as generally, Jobcentreplus offices don't have public toilets.

Good luck :)

  • If you've recently had a baby (and are not yet getting Child Benefit for the child) they would ask for a Birth Cert, otherwise, the Service Centre staff can access Child Benefit Online (CBOL) - a system where they can check Child Benefit you are receiving (hence why the paperwork is not required). This is so they add the correct amount of Child Element onto your payment. Again, this would depend on the DOB of the children - there is a cut off date (which I can't remember offhand), whereby UC only pays Child Element for the first 2 children in the household.
8dayweek · 08/11/2018 22:21

OP, you might want to check UC is the right benefit for you at this time? You said you have 3 DC, but at the moment you generally can't get UC with 2 DC+

8dayweek · 08/11/2018 22:22

And YY to everything @lashy said.

Bananasinpjs123 · 08/11/2018 22:38

Thank you everyone. Well they have paid me the bash rate and they know my kids details. Universal credit has taken over in my area so I'm not entitled to the old benefit system. I have found all my documents etc. Don't have a cv as I work from home part time to fit around child care etc.

I know it only pays for the first 2 children. But using online calculators it's better for me that they moved to universal credit as I actually get a bit more help! It's a very strange system though

OP posts:
Bananasinpjs123 · 08/11/2018 22:41

Ah no I'm worried now they are going to screw me over and say I'm not entitled and have to pay back last 2 months payments if 300. My sis in law gets it but is a different county to me and she has 4 kids. I don't understand it

OP posts:
tinytemper66 · 08/11/2018 22:56

Sorry I didn't realise you had a job.

lashy · 08/11/2018 23:15

As a lone parent; the current Work Allowance (WA) is £198.00 - this means the first £198 of any wages you get will be totally disregarded. Your Universal Credit payment will reduce gradually as you earn more - for every £1 you earn your payment reduces by 63p (above the £198 WA).

Bananasinpjs123 · 08/11/2018 23:17

That's ok. We both work but just have a low income. Due to kids and dh was made redundant but with no pay so had to take what he could. But now 8day sent me that link and you can still claim housing benefit etc in our area according to the citizens advise website...although I was told differently... so now I'm preparing for them to say no and you owe us 600 odd pounds...Confused

OP posts:
Bananasinpjs123 · 08/11/2018 23:17

Sorry not a lone parent. Should have made that clear in the begining

Bananasinpjs123 · 09/11/2018 17:31

Update. Went all fine today. They just confirmed what I had said on my application looked at my evidence and made me an appointment to sign my commitments next week. Thanks for the help everyone

hmmwhatatodo · 09/11/2018 19:05

Glad to hear it went well. What a shame they couldn’t just do everything in one day.

Bananasinpjs123 · 09/11/2018 19:15

I know. Dp was working so had to drag the 2 small ones through the rain and on the bus. We were early. Trying to be organised. The guy didn't really know what he was doing with the couple before and had to get help and was then 20 minutes late so the poor kids were waiting about 45 minutes. Due to bus times we were really early and didn't want to keep going out in the rain so they had some snacks and were very good considering it was the youngest nap time. He then didn't know what he was doing with mine and had to get someone else sit with us. I'm guessing he is new. That's fine we all have to learn. But i have to drag them all the way there again in 2 weeks time delaying everything because he ran over on our aolppointment too. Still they were happy and didn't ask for anything else. I actually had too much information! But they didn't even take a photo copy of my ID or my NI number or proof of address. And they said dp didn't have to go either.... which was strange as on the phone they said he needed his own appointment. For all they know he might not know I made a claim! Just all very strange and not what others told me it would be like! I expected it to be difficult and have to keep going back with other information. I'm not complaining but now wandering if something will pop up down the line!

We have just got over this horrible stomach bug so not feeling great either but couldn't change the appointment date

Any advice please
Relative has just had baby, single parent and just been put in emergency accomodation ,
She had to sign up for housing benefit with the borough that housed her and sign up for U/Credit in the borough she staying at moment.
Her first appointment for U/C is Monday 9.15 am And iwas going to go with her as support as she young and difficulty understanding some things (nearly had melt down doing claim forms)

Her baby is very ill and on meds from GP yesterday and hospital today , cant call U/C as it's week end !
She has no income at all at mo but that's ok we will help her,
but will they make her do a new claim or just reschedule ?

Worried for her as no rent is being paid to landlord yet, also she's going to stay with me for few days untill baby is well, worried that the council who housed her will think she does not need the place as they called her last week and asked why she had not picked keys up ( she did but landlord changed the lock and gave her wrong key ) she just move some of her belongings today and came to me but now baby is contagious so can't go out.
I could have baby on Monday but she really will struggle on her own at appointment.
