Hi all

So yet another name change for the No Spend 19 thread some of us have been discussing (not a TAAT - juts a spin off)

The aim is to reduce the unnecessary spending on "stuff". We're almost at the end of the year and so 2019 is a good time to start.

It would be great if as many people as possible thought it was feasible for them so there are no hard and fast rules but to give you an idea my rules are as follows:

Food and drink purchases are permitted (although personally I will also be trying to grow as much as possible myself, reduce air miles and reduce single use plastics in the food we buy. In addition I will be avoiding being tempted to pay extra for brands. Meals out and takeaways are also on our no spend list)

Essential household products and toiletries are permitted. So it is ok to buy washing powder but personally I will be avoiding buying six different types of stain remover, fabric conditioner, ironing water and all the other stuff we are told we need to do to clean a load of washing Hmm. Likewise we will be buying soap, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo as essentials but will not be buying hair masks, face masks, make up, face cream, serums, body sprays, nail varnish, showergels, body scrubs etc. Perfectly acceptable to use up everything you have though.

essential clothing etc is permitted. DH and I won't be buying anything unless absolutely unavoidable but DC are growing and will need shoes, trousers etc. We will aim to keep this to a minimum though.

Fuel and other travel costs are permitted

Normal household bills are permitted of course

stuff is not permitted. So toys, books (library is fine), magazines, CDs, DVDs, random household items like cushions, candles, stationery etc are all on the aim not to buy list. This Christmas will be prior to the experiment starting but we are already asking for experience presents for the DC eg cinema tickets.

We are just feeling a bit like consumerism has gone mad and so we think we can probably do this. In our household it is me, DH DS1 (13) and DS2 (11, nearly 12). Anyone up for joining? We start at the beginning of 2019

Disclaimer: before we decided to do this we had already booked and paid for our holiday for next year. It is a bit of a cheat but I don't want to delay this just because we'd already done that.

I may need significant Gin to get me through Grin

Monday: 7.50 shopping £1.50 work food
Tuesday 1.50 work food
Wednesday 5.00 shopping 15.00 fuel which should last until next Tuesday.
£77 my contribution towards a trip to Dublin! But i removed the shoes from my online basket! Travel is my major expence
Thursday nsd
Friday- so far 2.80
Could do with a nsd Saturday Sunday or minimum to balance out this week really happy I've not brought anything to wear since start of January which is nothing short of a personal miracle for me!

loveliesbleeding1 · 08/02/2019 16:54

Went into town, spent a fiver on some foundation in the sale, but I needed it so that’s fine.still putting into savings most days.Everyones doing so well with nsd’s!!

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 08/02/2019 20:11

What kind of takeaway are you having giggage? It sounds like your ex is as flaky with the payments as mine. It always feels like bonus money when I actually get anything, which is great, but it shouldn't be like that. So annoying.

When are you off to Dublin justanother? We went last year, such a lovely city. I think I would travel the world if money were no object!

Spent £13.71 on food today. I'm hoping for a generally low spend weekend.
What's everyone up to?

Curry. It's lovely, just can't eat it all so I suspect DS will have it for his breakfast tomorrow.

Justanotheruser01 · 09/02/2019 08:49

@HoundOfTheBasketballs
We're going in the spring so hopefully it'll be nice(ish) weather but because it's not the summer it will be slightly less busy were going on a Sunday night so we've only paid £77 each including flights which seems good from what we've seen recently. Me too I want to be rich and go everywhere.

Justanotheruser01 · 09/02/2019 14:32

I've been shopping today - whoops. Prime example of why I need to just not go shopping and internet order if I need a gift or something for somebody haven't spent a lot of money but still £22 I didn't need to spend. Got 4 new short sleeve tee shirts from Dorothy perkins as they have 25% off and got two bargain beach towels from Debenhams should be £20 each but paid £7.50 for two as I had a £5 voucher for click and collecting

grannycake · 10/02/2019 05:18

£60 foodshop and £7 for cold/cough remedies otherwise NSD for 3 days No spends planned for today

Clutterfreeintraining · 10/02/2019 13:33

I've just done my first internet food shop in a month. £130 ShockShock I have ordered a few stockpile items so that bumped it up but should reduce my food bill in a couple of months. I just need to clear some space to store the extra items now Grin
NSD yesterday
I did buy a few things on Friday but nearly all were planned purchases.
I have noticed that my initial enthusiasm has waned slightly so I spent a while yesterday updating my spending in my diary for the week before. I've made a plan to separate my personal spending from my business spending so it's easier to calculate for my tax return and easier for me to see where I'm wasting money on personal spends.
Ds and I are going on holiday in two weeks and I'm trying to resist the urge to panic buy a whole load of stuff we won't need.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 11/02/2019 20:26

So much for a low spend weekend. Blush

£24 on drinks and food out with friends.
£4 on parking.
£80 on theatre tickets for later in the year and £22 on the first instalment for a festival ticket, again for later in the year! ShockShock

Oops.

Then today my bike got a puncture so I had to pay £11 getting that fixed, £4 on a bus to work and back and £2.40 on food.

I'm travelling for work for the next two days so hopefully I can bang everything on the company credit card.

How's everyone else getting on? Better than me I hope!!

grannycake · 12/02/2019 05:27

Still fluey here - no energy for spending and no taste buds for eating

Justanotheruser01 · 12/02/2019 20:51

February is going really bad!!
So spends as follows
Sunday - £7costa we arrived for an apt too early, £8 Morrisons £1.50 gift bag for a birthday present.
Monday - £50 diesel this will be enough to last me until 28th hopefully
£4 cupboard supplies needed for tea
Tuesday: £3 bits needed for tea and 2 pasta sachets for lunches.
So I'm not spending on unessentials really but spending money nonetheless.
Hopefully not need to spend much on food for a bit worked a food plan until the 21st out but will need to get the add ons.
Need to get back out of the habit of bloody Costa.

Littlechocola · 13/02/2019 09:01

It’s all going wrong as the honeymoon gets closer!
I’m being mindful of what I spend but I’m spending.

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 14/02/2019 11:31

I'm sure it will all be worth it littlechocola, when do you go?

I've just got back from Norway where I've been for two days with work.
I spent £9.69 on a glass of wine in the hotel Shock and then £21.18 on gifts for DS. It's a good job we took the company credit card with us for business expenses, everything is so expensive there.

This morning I've spent £8.37 on groceries.
I want to try and curb my spending a bit before the end of the month. But half term is on the horizon. Eek!

grannycake · 14/02/2019 12:15

I think you should just enjoy the honeymoon (hopefully you'll only have one) and then start again when you come back. I spent 23.00 topping up petrol yesterday - because I had 5p off a litre and then I forgot to use the voucher. Doh!!. Also about £32.00 in Sainsburys on groceries. Will need about another £20 in Aldi tomorrow but otherwise on budget. Have nearly got enough for the roof without raiding savings accounts - 2 weeks to go. (I did already have a large part of it in an accessible account)

Justanotheruser01 · 15/02/2019 19:16

February isn't going well at all. Got an expensive weekend ahead but going to be starting a fresh on Monday

Clutterfreeintraining · 15/02/2019 20:49

I had been quite pleased with my spending when I checked my credit card app earlier - 10 days into new billing month and had only spent £6 so far! However, that's all gone to pot now as I've just put travel insurance, visa and cost of a replacement gift on it.

Justanotheruser01 · 18/02/2019 08:22

OK so the month restarts today.
Pro bank haven't been as bad as I would in the past but can deffinatly see a lot of unnecessary spends kicking back in

Justanotheruser01 · 18/02/2019 08:24

Pro bank is probably!

grannycake · 18/02/2019 08:30

Not great this weekend. Bought some much needed bras and a couple of pairs of work shoes so about £100 all in. Have also ordered heel grips for the above shoes. Moonpig card/small gift for GD Otherwise have been pretty good - yesterdays meal was from freezer (combination of frozen leftovers and bits left from Xmas

HoundOfTheBasketballs · 18/02/2019 12:13

I've definitely been struggling more this month than last. I think I need to be more organised. If I'm planning things better then I'm inevitably spending more mindfully.
I've spent £70 this weekend, on a night out, some petrol and a totally unnecessary Greggs!

Justanotheruser01 · 18/02/2019 19:15

Spent £1.90 at work £8 in aldi on way home but that will get me 3teas and one or maybe two lunches so not too bad

Justanotheruser01 · 20/02/2019 10:23

Inspired by somebody I've been watching on YouTube I have gone through my bank account and started to work out my 2018 spending. I am mortified I've only done my Costa Starbucks Nero habit so far and in 2018 I'm embarrassed to say I could have gone all inclusive abroad on a relatively nice holiday. Haven't even done any other expenses yet and that's card only!!

Clutterfreeintraining · 20/02/2019 15:47

Goodness, sounds like that would take a long time to work through.
Only two days until I go away and that's all I can think about at the moment Blush. I am still being careful about what I spend and have totally succeeded in not impulse buying a whole suitcase worth of clothes for holiday - almost failed last night but realised it was too late for anything to be delivered now Grin
Still waiting for one invoice to be paid (almost 4 weeks now Hmm) which means my account is not looking particularly great but next invoices due out on Friday so fingers crossed that will cover the extra spends from being on holiday. And my credit card is only at £80 for this month. I don't anticipate anything else going on it so that will make a big difference next month and go some way to making up for two weeks of no earnings!!
I am expecting to be back to normal, money wise, by April!!

grannycake · 22/02/2019 04:54

£29 in Aldi and another £27 in Home Bargains - bit of prepping for Brexit there for toiletries. Also had a Who gives a crap order for £55 - toilet paper, kitchen roll and tissues for at least 3 months

Justanotheruser01 · 26/02/2019 17:17

Gone very quiet on here - wondering if everybody has had a bad month like i have honestly cant wait until 1st march then all my statements for March start again and in my head its like a fresh start.
I do have money left over which is a good thing but i feel a bit sick the lack of no spend days for the month and costa Mcdonalds and friends are back.
Goals for march - save my car insurance up for April without the need to go into my savings.
