Crossing The Severn on A48 bridge- bad weather...

Tomorrow I have to drive to Chepstow and am planning on using the A48 bridge, around noon.

The weather looks dire, heavy rains and high winds.

Do they close this bridge often for such weather, and where should I look to see if they have so I can plan another route?

TIA

They do close the bridge in bad weather - there's the second severe crossing though. Which direction are you coming from?

I think it does tend to get restricted for high-sided vehicles in very high winds but not sure about closing completely. If it does, the alternative would be to use the new Severn Crossing instead, then exit at the next junction at Magor, get back onto the M4 then branch off to go back towards Chepstow.

Its usually only closed to high sided vehicles, but if it is, the diversion signs are put on and it is very well advertised - I see the signs right up in Worcestershire if there is an issue

Coming from the South (Southampton).

If it is shut, come off the M4 at Swindon, go up the A417 to Gloucester and cross there then go down the A48. That's what I do when going to Monmouth. Takes about the same time as going via the bridge.

MulderitsmeX · 08/11/2018 20:05

In the worst weather they divert through Gloucester, I second the A417 as an alternative
