dd is having a Great British Bake Off party on Friday - age 11

The plan is 3 rounds

  1. they each get a simple recipe and cook it (in pairs) - these are judged, but also eaten at the end of the party as part of the tea. I did this when dd1 had a similar party, they made cheese straws, cookies, something else savoury and brownies I think. Judging will award a couple of certificates
  2. decorate a cupcake (with judging)
  3. make your own pizza - judged on how delicious it looks

then one person will be made overall star baker, and we all eat pizza, cupcakes and the rest of the things they made.

Lats time it was amazing, lots of fun, that was a few years ago,a nd they were younger.

My problem is that one person coming is dairy free. I am struggling to find kids recipes that are dairy free. They don't all have to be, and the cupcakes and pizzas are sorted. But I need help with the other bakes.

He can eat Stork if cooked, so anything where I can use stork instead of butter is fine (that will be the cup cakes)
So - can you use stork in brownies?
I have a recipe for cheese and cranberry filo parcels, which look cool, any suggestions for what else they could put in them for dairy free?
Any suggestions for easy child friendly recipes?

No after cook decorating, these need to be finished once they go in the oven.

Thank you

I use dairy free butter, like vitolife or pure. If you Google vegan recipes you'll get a whole range of ideas. Buy dairy free cheese, Sainsbury's or Tescos do a good range and they can also make their own wee mini pizza too. What other foods were you thinking of for the others. Most things van be adapted to suit.

I’ve used stork in brownies along with very dark chocolate that was dairy free too and it was delicious 😋

Stork isn't dairy free!

There are lots of dairy free spreads out there - Pure, Vitalite to name 2.

And of course you can use dairy free spreads in brownies. Any cupcake recipe is fine, just use dairy free margarine (not stork) instead of butter.

Holland and Barrett (& supermarkets) sell dairy free cheese - you could still make your cheese and cranberry parcels.

Stork hard block margarine is dairy free
You could do scones or flapjack dairy free, baked potato recipe ideas, muffins can be dairy free.
Good luck and have fun!

Jamie Oliver Vegan brownies (though we add marshmallows) are lovely

Most recipes convert to dairy free if you substitute vitalite/butter milk/coconut milk etc

Can your dairy free eat goat or sheep products (mine can) and goats cheese works brilliantly in some dishes as it gives a stronger flavour

Stork in a block dairy free
Stork in plastic tub not dairy free

If you are using sprinkles on cupcakes be careful as they aren’t always dairy free.

Most supermarkets do a soya or coconut based ‘cheese’

Oatly do a good cream

Just adapt what ever receipe you have

A lot of the ready roll pastry type things are dairy free (jus roll for example) so could you do jam tarts or something using that?

A lot of people who are dairy intolerant are also allergic to soy (as it has similar proteins) so worth checking with the child’s parent.

FWIW, we've only ever done vegan baking here and it's really easy.

Oh, lovely lots of ideas thank you.

I know stork in the tub isn't 100% dairy free, but we have know this lad for years and his mum has always told me he is fine with cakes cooked with this stork (and yes I double double checked the first time), and dd always makes a stack of cup cakes or muffins when he is coming over. That is very familiar, as is cup cake decorating stuff, we've done that lots.

We have also had him to eat with us, which was easy, it is adapting the kids bakes which suddenly threw me, as all my kids recipe books start with - 200 g butter....
one or two of these kids have never cooked, in fact one lad is coming who has never ever cooked anything and is excited but nervous! I will obviously pair him up with an experienced cook!

I need to get some dairy free cheese for the pizza anyway, so could use that, although mum says he is just as happy to eat it with just toppings.

Any ideas for something else for the parcels that isn't cheese, dd has just turned her nose up at cheese and cranberry, but loves the parcel idea.

After I posted this I suddenly thought the shop bought filo may not be dairy free, so good to hear that it probably is, I'll check and have an alternative up my sleeve.

Just spent all evening stenciling their names onto aprons, lovely professional chef looking black cotton aprons with their names in block stencil in white. Look great, really pleased! Aprons were a bargain in an on-line sale
