Gin - Aldi which one is best?

Hi
I’ve heard on here about fantastic gin from the budget supermarkets. Had a look in Aldi the other day & quite a selection. Just wondered if you had any recommendations or personal favorites? I am thinking for Christmas presents as well as our everyday gin (not that we drink every day Wink!)
Thank you!

Following. I do like Hendricks gin so would be interested in replies.

We've had the citrus which is lovely. I will try more as I've heard they are all good.

Kezzie200 · 07/11/2018 07:49

Ive found Aldi gin to still be quite expensive. Currently im drinking Ophir, which Amazon was selling for £18, and Tanquary Sevilla, which I picked up from one of the other supermarkets for £20.

The best one in Aldi is the regular one dry gin in the green glass bottle. Looks like gordons. It has won lots of blind taste tests. Really good.

ihatethecold · 07/11/2018 08:25

Do they have a Hendricks copy at Aldi?

Loonoon · 07/11/2018 08:29

Mum buys me Oliver Cromwell Dry Gin from Aldi sometimes. I normally drink Gordons and it tastes very similar to me. The slim line tonic is also very nice.

WhoopiGoldbergsCat · 07/11/2018 08:29

I second the regular London dry gin in the green bottle.
One of the nicest gins I've tasted and only 9.99 for a bottle.

WhipItGood · 07/11/2018 08:45

Another vote for the one in the green bottle.

I was astonished at their range when I was in Aldi recently though 😳

Those flavoured ones are ok, but I tend to think of them as some other kind of drink other than gin.

They can be nice of course (I even made my own marmalade gin which was lovely) but to me real gin isn’t flavoured.

Hellywelly10 · 07/11/2018 08:47

Another vote for the knock off gordans.

MrsAmaretto · 07/11/2018 08:49

Aldi are now stocking Shetland gin from a tiny producer up here, it’s beautiful so do try it if you see it!

Almondio · 07/11/2018 08:50

Lidl's Hortus range is pretty good, at about £16 a bottle. They do a citrus one and I think some seasonal flavours too. Their botanical version is very nice too.

Oldraver · 07/11/2018 08:56

The blue one is lovely

Happyhouralways · 07/11/2018 09:08

Amazing thank you so much - my first post & so many replies!
@Kezzie200 we like a citrus Tanquary one - nice flavor, doesn’t taste too sweet/artificial like some of the flavored ones. Never thought to get gin from amazon but will see what I can find.
Think I will try the Gordon’s knock-off & the Shetland one sounds like a great gift for my step dad. Thank you

@whipitgood - how do you make the marmalade gin? I love marmalade & gin - match made in heaven?!

Happyhouralways (great name for this topic😁)

Marmalade gin is easy. I followed a Good Housekeeping recipe which is online if you google.

Basically, in a clean Kilner jar: dollop in a jar of marmalade, a couple of bay leaves, few peelings of orange zest and a bottle of gin (I also added a few drops of orange essence - not in the recipe but as I had some I bunged it in too).

Stir it all up. Keep in fridge and stir from time to time. Keep at least two weeks, but longer is better, I kept it 4. Strain it through muslin back into a bottle.

I think mine could’ve done with straining a couple more times. It tastes nice but is a bit cloudy.

Nice with the clementine tonic that Fevertree do 🙂

Happyhoursalways, there was an article in the paper the other day where Aldi and Lidl gins beat the known brands like Tanqary and Gordon's.

Unfortunately, you may need to try quite a few to check Grin

Happyhouralways · 07/11/2018 18:50

Going to try making the marmalade gin thanks @whipitgood My neighbour makes damson gin so might do a swapsies with him
Yes @ineedabodytransplant I agree, only way to tell if they are any good will be to test them.... all....what a shame Grin

I make rhubarb gin every summer. It’s so good.

combatbarbie · 07/11/2018 19:37

Nettle black forest one is lovely!!

Bonkerz · 07/11/2018 19:40

Lidl have a great selection too. The sloe gin is amazing

HeyMicky · 07/11/2018 19:58

Lidl have a gin festival on now. Some surprisingly good ones in there. Lidl are particularly good at their descriptions - bouquet, palate etc - so you can choose one that suits.
