Put cling film round it, it’s the air passing over it that causes the pain. If you stop the air it generally feels a lot better v quickly!

GoatsInTrees · 06/11/2018 17:47

Cool running water, don't put any creams on it www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 17:50

Oh no. A burn thread.

When did it happen? Where is it? How big is it? How long did you run it under cool water?

Go back to the tap and run it under cool water again. Take the frozen stuff away, that can damage it more.

PurpleWithRed · 06/11/2018 17:52

Frozen sardines not good - ice delays healing. Ice cream is excellent if applied internally, also ice if in gin and tonic and taken orally.

What Goats says - 20 mins of cool running water, no creams or gunk, no ice, cling film gives some protection after the cooling. But 20 mins of cooling, more if necessary, to start with.

georgedawes · 06/11/2018 17:52

no creams/frozen stuff, you need to keep it under cool running water.

duvetdaysgone · 06/11/2018 17:55

If you have baby wipes put some in the freezer for a bit then wrap one round your thumb. Change the wipe when it starts to thaw. We did this with DD (4) when she got a small burn in an awkward place for keeping it under the tap.

Try aloe Vera gel

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 17:55

Don’t put frozen things in burns.

Just cool water.

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 17:56

Don’t use aloe Vera gel.

Just cool water.

I’ve now swapped sardines for a bottle of water which is helping.

It’s the tip of my thumb it bloody hurts,

How long did you run it under the tap?

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 06/11/2018 21:59

For 20 mins, god it still hurts I’m lying in bed with my thumb in a cup of cold water.

Have you taken any painkillers?

How big is it?

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 06/11/2018 22:01

Took 2 nurofen, it’s about the size of a pound coin. So not big just bloody agony.

MsNowtyBach · 06/11/2018 22:02

I've never seen frozen sardines, what were you going to do with them?

Sorry about the burn.

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 06/11/2018 22:04

They were a bloody bargain reduced to 40p off the fish counter at Waitrose so I bought about six of them. I have no idea what I’m going to do with them but have to eat them tomorrow (or give them to the cat)

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 22:06

You can take paracetamol safely with nurofen. That might take the edge off a bit.

Has it blistered? I’d watch very closely for signs of infection and have a low threshold for getting it looked at by a medical professional because it’s on your thumb.

NancyDonahue · 06/11/2018 22:08

I swear by toothpaste. It's like magic for the pain. I'm always burning myself and it's never caused me a problem.

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 06/11/2018 22:09

It’s wrinkly but hasn’t dried out yet. Will take more pills.

Doesn’t putting your hand in water when asleep make you wet yourself? I guess I’ll find out.

DO NOT PUT TOOTHPASTE ON BURNS.

Mumsnet burns advice makes me want to throw things.

formerbabe · 06/11/2018 22:11

I burnt the tip of my finger the other day...was making honey and lemon chicken...I've now learnt that boiling honey is hotter than hell! It was a tiny burn but agonisingly painful.

I fell asleep clutching an ice pack...didn't know you weren't meant to put ice on burns Blush

Chuggachuggatoottoot · 06/11/2018 22:14

This happened to me a few weeks back and yes it does really hurt. What worked for me is keeping it in cool water for about 20 minutes then wrapping it in cling film.

NancyDonahue · 06/11/2018 22:14

purple I did say toothpaste hadn't harmed me. It did take the sting right out and allow me to sleep. I'm sure the op can make her own mind up if she uses it or not!

PurpleDaisies · 06/11/2018 22:24

purple I did say toothpaste hadn't harmed me.

That should not be the minimum standard for giving medical advice. Hmm

Putting toothpaste on a burn is a terrible idea. It’s totally against what the NHS guidelines recommend and will likely make it worse.
