What do charity shops do with out of season clothes?

Just had a big sort out and virtually none of DD’s spring/summer clothes will fit her by next year so I’m donating the lot. However, I’ve suddenly thought, would it be a pita for charity shops to get a load of summer clothes this time of year? Do they store them until it’s the right season?

At the one I used to volunteer in they stored the decent brand clothes and ragged the rest as they had only a tiny storage bit.

Quite usual for charity shops to get last seasons everything, we get everything just as iits gone out, we are lucky we have loads of storage space so anything wrong season goes upstairs and get stored till its right to put it out in the shop i dont know what small shops do

bookmum08 · 06/11/2018 17:12

If they have no storage space they will probably be sold to the rag man.

WorldParty · 06/11/2018 17:13

What happens to rags? Can they be used for anything

safariboot · 06/11/2018 17:14

Sent for rags or binned, I expect. There was a thread a while back at how much stuff some charity shops bin.

swampytiggaa · 06/11/2018 17:15

We are able to sort it and store it 😁

Our local Age UK shop has a quality out of season rail for the best stuff.

Notquiteagandt · 06/11/2018 17:16

@WorldParty remember going to the oxfam warehouse years ago they said they sell the rags to rag companys who pulp it and it goes to mattress or sofa fillings or insulation or a whole range of things.

Unsure if common amongst all charity shops? But rag pulp certainly serves a purpose.

Notquiteagandt · 06/11/2018 17:17

They also said they would sell out of season clothes to jobbers who would then take it abroad to sell (where one would ashume it was warmer?)

Thanks. I've often wondered if there is anywhere to send clothes that are not fit to wear

I bag the tatty stuff and label it as rags and drop it into the charity shop. I tend to hold on to the out of season stuff and drop it in the following year so it doesn't get ragged.

There is a children's charity that collects it around here but it is based in another part of the country, always posting in the local FB group for clothing and toys. Maybe have a Google for it, Sunshine or Sunny something or other I think.

BluePheasant · 06/11/2018 17:52

Thank you for answers Smile sounds like depends on the shop then. They are mostly small ones here so maybe I’ll bag it up and put in the loft until spring. It’s decent stuff so I would hate it to end up as rags when someone’s children could get good use out of it next year.

I did this last year, kept a big bag until Summer rolled round (then had to remember it was in a cupboard and actually take it to the shop!).

I imagine not many would think to do it but it helps them out with storage and I didn’t want them going for rags.

Try Women's Aid too or other refuges. If women have escaped DV with their children they may have left all the clothing behind and will be grateful for some decent stuff.
