Tell me about your best ever UK summer holiday

We're sacking off Majorca next summer and staying in UK. Not because of money, but logistics etc and to be honest we just fancy it.

I've looked at Center Parcs which is great for activities but quite rigid in terms of dining options etc, also we had thought other family members might visit which they charge for.

Alternatively, we could find a wonderful hotel or self catering place but we have one DS who will only really enjoy himself if he has the opportunity to make friends.

His two holiday passions are football and swimming.

We're in Scotland so looking to head south rather than north, maybe get a few degrees better weather? I love Yorkshire and Cornwall but totally open minded for a great base and fun for DS.

Anyway never mind all that, have you taken a summer holiday with kids in the UK, and if you loved it please tell me more!

We've travelled the world... Mexico, Spain, Maldives, Bangkok...

Our best holiday was a log cabin in Keldy, with a hot tub and BBQ. Situated right under the trees. No phone signal. Bliss.

We pre-booked a particular cabin so we were not overlooked. It felt like we were the only ones in the woods. 30 mins or so from Whitby. 20 or so mins from Pickering.

It was approx £600 in June for the cabin that slept 4 people about 2 years ago.

We took DS - 3ish at the time. Lots of lovely walks, play parks to visit,. We went on the steam train too. We had great weather though. Blistering heat.

Not much fun on the beach if it's pissing down.

VinoEsmeralda · 06/11/2018 12:05

Same as cjt110. Our kids love camping and those are the best family holidays for us. Also city trips now they are teenagers but they still say camping is the best....

Titsywoo · 06/11/2018 12:07

Isle of Wight was the best when they were younger. Hired a lovely house and drove around all the attractions. Very nostalgic for me and dh and the kids loved it.

As teens we went to Centre Parcs this year and took their friends. It was brilliant and we rebooked for next year. We only ate out once and won't bother next time. The dine in service was great and not expensive so we'll do that plus a couple of bbqs.

MorrisZapp · 06/11/2018 12:14

Center Parcs and eating in sounds good. I'm thinking of nabbing a cousin to keep him company. The woods sounds gooooooorgeous but DS expires in a puff of smoke after five minutes without WiFi.

What's a British childhood without pissing rain?

Camping on the west coast of the Isle of Wight. Loads to do for kids. We were lucky with the weather though - not sure it would have been so enjoyable in the rain!

Dirtygirtyisthirty · 06/11/2018 12:17

Polzeath on the north Cornish coast-many happy holidays spent there and the swimming/surf is fab
There are some good hotels in the area-St Moritz hotel for example, and plenty of campsites too

Dowser · 06/11/2018 12:22

We go to Tenerife three times a year but this year we bought a static caravan and I’ve loved the 4-5 nights we’ve had there each week

We are just north of york
Been all over..never even made it to Scarborough or Whitby
On really hot days just enjoyed sitting on our deck

PeridotCricket · 06/11/2018 12:22

NOrthumberland. Great beaches, Newcastle is a fun city, loads to do...

Bombaybunty · 06/11/2018 12:22

A cottage near the sea in Bamburgh. Beautiful beach, a castle, boat trips and nice pubs.
In the area there's loads to do, had a brilliant time.

Alex3101 · 06/11/2018 12:27

North Wales here, we've hired cottages or camped there a lot. DS1 is 4 he loves it there, woods to play, trees to climb, mountains walk. Lots of lovely beaches, plenary to do.
We are camping in the Lakes next year and the Peaks as well.

OhTheRoses · 06/11/2018 12:32

Fowey. Lawhyre Cottages. other children, playground, room for footie, woodland walk to Readymoney Bay. Brilliant for rockpooling and swimming.

Pieceofpurplesky · 06/11/2018 12:33

Hiring a cottage in Pembrokeshire. Amazing beaches and countryside as well as lots to do. We love Tenby and hire a cottage with sea views. The beaches are amazing and lots of pubs and restaurants. Lots to do for
Children round and about.
If you want somewhere where kids can make friends there is Bluestone nearby or one of the caravan parks such as Kiln Park or Lydstep Haven. We prefer a cottage though.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 06/11/2018 12:43

We went to Dorset this summer and it was amazing ( during the heatwave). Highlands End holiday park is right on the cliffs near Bridport. We camped ( gets very windy!) but they have holiday lodges and caravans too.

Also love Cornwall - we have stayed in a villa with a shared pool near Newquay ( Porth Veor Hotel and villas) three times and had a fantastic time.

Also stayed near Mevagissey which is nice. Porthluney beach is my favourite beach in the world!

AnyFucker · 06/11/2018 12:48

A beach cottage at Croyde Bay, North Devon. 2 minutes walk through the dunes onto a brilliant beach and 5 mins walk from charming Croyde village. We would walk to the beach at 8am in swimmers just carrying a towel and a body board.

We had 2 weeks of warm sunny weather and it was glorious

Grumpbum123 · 06/11/2018 12:49

Woolley Grange and Maenporth Estate in Cornwall

Disneydilemma · 06/11/2018 12:56

Seaview in the Isle of Wight during this year’s heatwave. Fab beach for swimming, sand playing and rockpools. Sea was warm (easily comfortable to swim from 8am til 9pm! Cottage was 1 minute walk away from beach, 15 min walk from excellent pubs. Kids made friends on the beach.
Plenty of other things to do on the island but they weren’t needed as it was so brilliant on the beach.
I’m not sure what it would be like without the heat though.

Purplehammer · 06/11/2018 12:57

OP if your DS can’t live without wi-fi he would enjoy being at home.
Can you get someone to stay with him and you go on holiday.

delilahbucket · 06/11/2018 13:03

Another vote for Isle of Wight. To ease the travelling perhaps you could stop off somewhere over night mid journey. The weather is often great down there which is a huge bonus. And it kind of feels like you're going abroad with the boat trip.

IdblowJonSnow · 06/11/2018 13:23

Northumberland for you guys? It's lovely. We went 4 years ago and they had a heatwave! Of sorts anyway! Loads to do and gorgeous. Could u book him into a course and club for friend making? Centre parcs is fine but a bit soulless and will be massively over priced in school hols.

kaytee87 · 06/11/2018 13:29

We went to north Norfolk for a week in August and had an amazing time! The weather was glorious, brilliant beaches and so much to do for kids. If you do like the look of it, I can give you a list of the places we visited.
Can't recommend North Norfolk enough.

kaytee87 · 06/11/2018 13:31

We drove down from Scotland fyi.
We also went to fuertaventura and Cyprus this year but Norfolk was my favourite

Babybearsporij · 06/11/2018 13:41

Lake District - Coniston, Ambleside, Windermere. Had some amazing holidays there as kids.

Babybearsporij · 06/11/2018 13:43

Sorry, pressed post too soon! Very outdoorsy, sailing, swimming, walking etc. There's some brilliant stuff for kids too, like Ullswater Steamers, Wray Castle & Beatrix Potter museum.
