Diy in semi detached house

I'm aware of what the actual legal times spare for noise with neighbours but what actual time do people think to reasonable to be drilling and hammering in a semi detached house during the week?

From 8-7 Monday-Saturday 10-4 Sunday.

Although I would ask if next door works nights/has young children.

Bluelonerose · 05/11/2018 21:34

Ide say up till 7pm maybe a bit later on weekends.
Depends how well you know the neighbours too. My ndn works shifts so if there's very noisy work I tend to knock a couple of weeks before to see what shifts she's on so at least she can sleep when she needed too.

If you are my neighbour OP I'm so sorry (though we are an end terrace), DH didn't realize how late it was. Normally 7pm is the cut off for drilling and hammering and electric sawing in this house unless it's an emergency.

Broadly, I’d say 9-7, but it really depends on the specifics... if it’s only a week or two, I’d suck up longer hours, but for longer-term, I’d want a decent chunk of quiet time in the evening. Either way, I’d appreciate advance notice, rather than have it just happen.

icelollycraving · 05/11/2018 21:48

I think 7-9 ish is ok short term.

AirandMungBeans · 05/11/2018 21:52

9ish is very late. I'd be livid if my neighbour was making diy noise at that time of night. I have two young dc, youngest is 4 and he'd struggle so much at school the next day if he was kept awake that late. It'd be bad enough as a one off, but horrendous for him for weeks at a time

m0therofdragons · 05/11/2018 21:59

I'd be unimpressed if it was after 7pm - my dc go to bed at 7pm and seriously need their sleeps. (Suddenly feeling pleased I live in a detached house).

purplecorkheart · 05/11/2018 22:05

A lot depends on your neighbours. If they are single /commuting/working from 7am to 7pm. It is going to be different from a young family who's kids arw winding down for bed at six

preggersteach · 05/11/2018 22:17

@overagain don't worry it wasn't you! Just checking we weren't unreasonable, just had new neighbour moved in, I think a case of first time buyer, just moved out from parents, totally oblivious to how thin the walls are in these old houses and having to think of others. The drilling literally sounds like it's in our bedroom but dh went round and she was very apologetic. We have a 3 month old baby who by some miracle stayed asleep, would've been fuming if it'd woken him up. I know what it says in regards to the law about making noise but I'm thinking more for good relations between neighbours over anything else.

My neighbour works for environmental health and has on occasion drilled/hammered etc until 10pm at night. Yes within legal times but what completely ignorant behaviour. We have a toddler.
