Travelling from Glasgow to Milton Keynes: How would you do it?

TheCatThatGlared · 05/11/2018 16:05

I'm not travelling for months but I'm trying to plan it. I've never been to Milton Keynes before and know little about it.

I'm debating between the train and flying there(I'm guessing that Luton is the best airport to fly to) but the train is always so bloody expensive. Coach might be an option.

I can't drive so that's out. I'd appreciate if any of the more experienced travel planners on here could suggest what they think is the best option. TIA

The train would be easiest by far.

KateGrey · 05/11/2018 16:08

Any particular reason you want to travel to Milton Keynes? There are probably nicer places to visit to be honest.

Toocold · 05/11/2018 16:09

Kategrey, do you live in MK? What do you know about it?

TheCatThatGlared · 05/11/2018 16:12

I'll be attending a concert there.

Train id say. Is the concert at the stadium? Im pretty sure they put on shuttle buses between the train station and venue. The airports a bit of a trek

MsRinky · 05/11/2018 16:17

I usually pay £18 each way (without a railcard) for advance tickets (a month ahead of time). I live in MK and have family in Glasgow. Flying is possible, and yes, Luton is the closest airport, and then there is a bus from the airport to MK. Train every time for me though.

Wonder if there have been any more tiresome cracks about Milton Keynes in the time it has taken me to type this. So dull, so predictable...

Toocold · 05/11/2018 16:18

It’s fine op, MK is no where near as bad as people make out, will you be at The Bowl? There is a hotel in nearby Furzton if that helps, I think it’s a premier Inn and Luton is your best airport. MK itself is always made out to be a concrete jungle but if you walk/ drive 10 mins out of the centre it is full of trees and countryside, there are lots of local villages surrounding it and a lot of history and Victorian houses that are never mentioned. It is gridroads and there are a lot of roundabouts though! The concrete cows that it is famed for are literally four or five in one field, there are plenty of real ones! Where I live it is surrounded by fields and farms but no one mentions that about MK!

TheCatThatGlared · 05/11/2018 16:21

Yes it's at the Stadium.

Train easiest option by far ,,

TheCatThatGlared · 05/11/2018 16:33

Thank you all so much for the travel, hotel and general MK advice. It's really appreciated and very helpful.

It seems like the train is definitely my best option. Hopefully I can grab a bargain(£18 each way is definitely that). I always hear of other people finding great train ticket deals but I've never been able to do so myself. Perhaps this time.

OP posts:
Toocold · 05/11/2018 16:42

Good Luck on the train ticket and have a great time at the concert!

TheCatThatGlared · 05/11/2018 16:44

I know that MK has a reputation but so many places do, and there are far worse things to be known for. So long as I get to enjoy the concert and there's somewhere decent enough to stay and somewhere to eat, I'm happy. I'll only be there for two days.

Thank you very much, TooCold.

Is it at the MK Dons stadium? You’d be best to get a train to Bletchley or Fenny Stratford if it is, then a taxi, as these stations are closer than MK Central

conkernuts · 05/11/2018 16:59

Oooo is this for a German band next year? I regularly travel from the midlands to Glasgow via train, but you can often find flights around the same price as a return train ticket. Luton or Bristol. (£18 each way is a STEAL but very rarely is it that cheap and you have to time purchasing just right)

TheCatThatGlared · 05/11/2018 17:02

It is indeed for Rammstein.Grin

OydNeverDeclinesGin · 05/11/2018 17:08

Make a account with train line. Then enter your travel details. There won't be any trains yet as the tickets are released 3 months before travel date. You can then get email notifications on the day your tickets go on sale and snap up the cheap ones 😁 I managed to get london/ west Yorkshire returns for £36 in total that way. Normally nearly £80!!

Fredathetortoise · 05/11/2018 17:08

Cheap advance tickets generally go on sale around 12 weeks ahead of travel date. So if the concert is in early July, that's some time early April. It can vary a bit, so I usually start checking a week or so ahead of when I think they will go on sale. If the site only has 'Anytime' tickets listed, then the Advance (cheap) aren't on sale yet.

MsRinky · 05/11/2018 17:43

Ah, yes I see, it is at the Stadium, not the Bowl, so yes, Bletchley station is nearer, but probably not worth the faff of changing trains specially, depends where your hotel is. MK station to the stadium will be about £6 in a taxi, £10 in a black cab. Have a great time.

ForalltheSaints · 05/11/2018 18:50

I'd go by train.

TheCatThatGlared · 05/11/2018 22:15

Thank you so much to everyone who has posted with information, advice and tips. I really appreciate it. You're a wonderful bunch.

If it's at a weekend make sure you check for engineering works - Sundays tend to be particularly bad for this and you don't want to be stuck on a rail replacement bus for hours!

conkernuts · 06/11/2018 09:26

Maybe see you there, OP, me and OH are considering a weekend in Frankfurt for it prices depending. If you've never seen them before, you're in for a treat.

QuinionsRainbow · 06/11/2018 10:56

You’d be best to get a train to Bletchley or Fenny Stratford
Not a lot of point in going to Fenny Stratford, as you would have to go to Bletchley first and change. Ditto about going to Bletchley, as there are almost certainly no direct trains from Glasgow that stop there, but I'm sure that most from Glasgow will stop at MKC.
