WWYD? Sensible job or dream job

youreinacultcallyourdad · 05/11/2018 11:48

So I’ve been offered two jobs, both starting immediately so I need to decide ASAP.
Job A- running a project that will last 1-2 years (minimum 12 months) this is pretty much my dream job but will involve a lot of travelling for weeks at a time and will be for 2 years maximum.
Job B- near home and is a role in a big company with an obvious career ladder.
My head is telling me B but my heart is saying A. I am young with no children/debts to worry about etc and my partner is supportive of the travelling role as he knows the job is something I’ve wanted to do for many years. However I fear if I take it once the project is over I won’t find another permanent career role allowing me to settle buy a house gave children etc.
Any opinions appreciated I’m torn

A. You have no children or debts and a supportive partner, you will quite probably not get this opportunity again when you have no children.

As someone who took the safe option when I didn’t need to, I cannot push you in the direction of dream job enough!!

JontyDoggle37 · 05/11/2018 11:53

Be brave. Go with the dream job. People with good skills and strong experience will always get work - if you can’t get a temp role you can go contracting if need be.

pippistrelle · 05/11/2018 11:53

If you have no major responsibilities now, then go for it. After all, there are no guarantees with Job B either, and who knows where Job A might lead after the project is up.

Well done on being offered two jobs.

scunner · 05/11/2018 11:54

As you have no dependents, the dream job.

Santaisgettingbusy · 05/11/2018 11:56

Dream job.
Or years of regret!

Flower777 · 05/11/2018 11:57

Dream job. And leave things on a positive note with B in case you want to come back to them later.

HiptoGable · 05/11/2018 12:28

Job A! There will be other sensible jobs if after two years there’s nothing else, but there may never be another good time for you to do job A.
Grab it with both hands and enjoy it.

youreinacultcallyourdad · 05/11/2018 12:50

Seems the decision is obvious, it’s terrifying taking such a risk but I think you’re all right if I can’t do it now I won’t do it ever.

Definitely dream job! Focus on upskilling yourself as much as possible to improve your employment opportunities after that

sansou · 05/11/2018 13:13

Are you saying that the first is a contract, not a permanent role and the second is a permanent job?

How old are you? Is this a first "proper" job? How much work experience have you got? Contracting is great if you've experience - the economy is starting a downturn imo and contracting jobs will be the first to go.

A permanent role at a large company would win over a fixed term contract for me if I was in my early/mid twenties and at the start of my career. A global corporate will have opportunities for you to work in different departments/travel/transfer internally/overseas.

SantaIsReal · 05/11/2018 13:33

Go with 'A'! You'd get to a stage in life where you will question yourself & the 'what ifs' if you don't take it! Plus I'm guessing this would be great experience for you!
Go for it! Grin

TillyTheTiger · 05/11/2018 15:42

I took an 'A' job when I was single and in my 20s and I loved every single second of it. Which is just as well, because it would be totally impossible now I'm a married mother in my 30s. Do it, there will be plenty of time to find a settled job afterwards, and who knows what doors this contract could open anyway!

GemmeFatale · 05/11/2018 15:50

A. Every day of the week. Please pick A

atomicfission · 05/11/2018 16:47

Oh yes definitely A. Pursue your dream! Other opportunities will follow.

I'm really excited for you! This thread has made me smile

bananamonkey · 05/11/2018 16:58

Job A while you can do it now!

nononsene · 05/11/2018 17:07

A without a doubt!!

Littlechocola · 05/11/2018 17:09

A. You might not get another chance. Do it while you can.

wizzywig · 05/11/2018 17:11

Dream job. And whats the story behind your username op?

ajandjjmum · 05/11/2018 17:12

Dream job.

But explain to Job B why you're turning down their offer - and that under any other circumstances, you'd love to work for them. Maybe they'll say get in touch with Job A finishes.

festivelyfoolish · 05/11/2018 17:14

I’d normally say A but what worries me is you are doing a lot of travelling which gets harder to do when you do have dc etc (speaks from experience) and you don’t see this job as a step up?

What is your 5-10 year plan to get yourself into a job that doesn’t suck when you do have more obligations?

If you’re really young, then ignore but if you are going to have a mortgage and dc in 5 years I’d think it through in terms of the job after this one too.

Perhaps neither job is right?

youreinacultcallyourdad · 05/11/2018 17:36

That’s for all the replies, firstly my username is a saying from a podcast so no story Smile
I am in my early twenties and although I’d like a family someday children and a mortgage is currently not in my radar.
A is a contract for minimum 12 months with potential to expand dependant on funding. Although it doesn’t have a direct career progression I think the experience will boost my cv as I’ll be working at a higher level with considerably more responsibility than at A.
I’m going to go for it as it’s not an opportunity that’ll come up often and if it takes me a while afterwards to find another role like B that’s not the end of the world.

JennyHolzersGhost · 05/11/2018 18:10

A but save as much as you can while you’re working in case you hit a bit of a drought when the contract finishes. And yes explain to B how much you’d love to work for them under any other circumstances, if they want you now then they may have other roles in future so keep your foot in that door.

festivelyfoolish · 05/11/2018 18:20

An you are really young! Good decision. Hard to tell when someone says young whether they are 20 or 30, both are young but obviously you may make a different career choice at 30 than 23.

JuniorDetective · 05/11/2018 18:27

Dream job here too and please report back in a year!

Needallthesleep · 05/11/2018 19:17

As someone who is making a similar decision now but has young children (so therefore I will have to take B), please take A!
