Endometrial Ablation

Just wondering if anyone has had this procedure & how has it been since? Absolutely floored from heavy periods and anaemia so seriously considering getting it done. I’m 43 and have 3 children so my family is complete. Is there any reason why someone would not be suitable for the procedure ? TIA

I had it done in January and it’s changed my life.

Haven’t had a period since! Mood swings and hot flushes have calmed right down. I do still get bloating and cramping, but much less than before.

The recovery was fairly easy but the anaesthetic knocked me right out - only started to feel like myself again after two weeks.

PM me if you want to know more. They had to do a test for fibroids which was hideous- but over in 10 minutes. Akin to having an exam during birth is the closest I can relate it to!

Hi I had the procedure done about 6 months ago due to stupidly heavy periods that resulted in me having iron infusions every other month!
I had the procedure done under general anaesthetic and had the next day off work and felt ok after that!
The results have been pretty good the bleeding for me has reduced a lot I seem to have two ok periods then a really heavy one but still better than before.
The only downside is the period pains seem to be a little worse but for me that’s a small price to pay 🙂

Hi, Missedmoments - Yes, I had an endometrial ablation about 15 months back, aged 54. Like you, I was suffering from long (30+ days), nightmarishly heavy periods and bad anaemia. I was told at my age there was a good chance the ablation would trigger the menopause.

In my case, the only condition I had to meet in order to have the operation was to have a "normal" haemoglobin count - when it came in just slightly below the required figure a couple of weeks before the op was scheduled, the specialist advised me to double the dose of the iron capsules I was taking (ferrous fumarate) to build it up more quickly...then nobody actually re-checked it on the day of the op!

Afterwards, I bled lightly for about a week, had maybe 12 days off then a very light period, then a month off followed by one last period from hell - about 12 days long and very heavy. After that, though, I began to get hot flushes and mood swings, and during 2018 have had maybe three very, very light periods (little more than spotting for a couple of days) each about three months apart.

Thanks so much for the replies & great to hear the positive outcomes. I think I read that having previous c - sections might be an issue for some. Having had three and an op to remove a cyst i’m wondering if it will be a problem for me. I can’t continue like this though. I’m so exhausted from it all. It’s interesting to hear it might trigger menopause if you are close to it. I wonder why ?

I was unsuitable for ablation because I had a number of small fibroids. This meant that the balloon could not make contact with the whole surface of my uterus so would not work.
