Do you have herpes? 1 or 2

Fuck you DAILY MAIL. 2nd thread on this I know, struggling today and just needing some rationalisation. I think I worded the other one wrongly and I wanted a slightly different approach.

All I want to know is if you have Oral or genital herpes, how do you deal with it? Live with it? Tell others? Do you tell others? When?

It’s just a rash, I know that logically, when it’s on a lip it’s no big deal, it can be on any bit of the body but when it’s on the private it’s suddenly a stigma that makes you feel your life is basically over. Looking for real world/real time advice. Oh and apparently the WHO estimates 70% of adults will contract it at some point in their lives so I think it’s worth discussing, I can’t statistically be alone!

I know. I feel so bad for her, it was a huge trauma. She's had two significant relationships since though - she takes aciclovir to suppress it which is pretty effective and they take usual precautions.

Vvmevvme · 05/11/2018 09:07

How does she tell them Not?? That’s the bit I’m atruggling with, the likely retail and rejection. I need to tell someone this week as we had sex last week Sad

I have genital herpes. I found out my partner was having an affair when he passed it to me when my youngest (of 3 DCs) was 9 months old. He left me.
The first attack was awful. I’ve had roughly one attack every 2-3 years since. I told my partner before we had piv sex and we always use a condom. We avoid some forms of sexual contact. I would be devastated if he caught it as he has other health issues and herpes wouldn’t be ‘easy’ for him.
I try to keep healthy and on top of stress as I feel this minimises reoccurrence.

I have both (blood test), had cold sore twice on my lip in 50 years. When first got it down below had it every few weeks - now have it once a decade!

CoteDAzur · 05/11/2018 09:38

@longwayoff There is a vaccine called Lupidon H that has completely sorted out my dad's oral herpes problem. He had it all the time, in his mouth, tongue, and sometimes even in his throat.

It is a long vaccine schedule but has totally been worth it for him.

longwayoff · 05/11/2018 09:43

Vvme, it would be unbearable and unmanageable without medication but isn't a problem as the medication is so effective. I had an early menopause in my 30s which killed off desire so sex life hasn't been a problem, I haven't passed it on. I got it from a dentist way back before HIV had been identified so am just grateful his sloppy hygiene didn't give me something worse. If herpes is causing you problems in your daily life, do get better medical attention, even if you have to go to the sexual health clinic - an experience in itself - it should be completely manageable.

longwayoff · 05/11/2018 09:46

Cote d'Azur, thank you, I'll definitely look into that today.

Howhot · 05/11/2018 09:48

I get cold sores. Large itchy and painful. I used to average two a year but they are more frequent recently. I'm on my 6th or 7th so far this year. Stress, being run down, hot air or cold air (drying out my lips) seem to bring them on for me. I've had a busy year at work, I'm pregnant, catching everything going, got through a heat wave and now it's bloody freezing outside... It's constant. One popped up 2 weeks ago and was almost healed when another appeared.Sad OH whole family get them and he isn't very careful around me (!!) but he's never had one. No way has he avoided the virus so I assume he just doesn't get the physical symptoms.

Fortheloveofscience · 05/11/2018 10:01

I have type 1, but get the breakouts on my genitals. Have had 2 outbreaks in 10 years, the first of which was a week after I got with a new bf (but we’d already slept together). I told him, of course, but it didn’t put him off - he’s now my DH. We don’t give it a second’s thought in our sex life, and he’s never shown the symptoms of an outbreak anywhere.

skippy67 · 05/11/2018 10:02

I have genital herpes. My last outbreak was earlier this year, but prior to that, I hadn't had one for about 15 years.

Namechange8471 · 05/11/2018 10:13

I have genital herpes type 2.

I got it when I was 17 , managed to have a normal birth and it doesn't really cross my mind now.

Namechange8471 · 05/11/2018 10:16

Op try positive singles!

It's a dating app for people with STDs.

I met dp on there, we've been together 3 years now 🤗 (we both have herpes)

AGHHHH · 05/11/2018 14:41

Op try positive singles!

I misread that as positive shingles Blush

Mmmmdanone · 05/11/2018 15:29

I had them before I met DH and think I told him early on but it's a long time ago! I was told there was no chance of infecting someone else if there were no current symptoms. I might have to check he remembers now😂

Mmmmdanone · 05/11/2018 15:48

More info- I'm pretty sure I got my genital herpes from my then bf who had a cold sore. He didn't believe that I had been faithful and was pretty horrid to me for a while. Should have binned him off for that but I was young and stupid.

Shelvesoutofbooks · 05/11/2018 16:17

@howhot please buy pure tea tree oil and dab it onto your cold sores constantly throughout the day. It has been a miracle for me

Rogueone · 05/11/2018 18:09

I have suffered with cold sores on my lips since I was a child. I have scarred lips from those nasties. My worst was last year after the horrors of camping and ended up with it becoming infected. My life saver has been the lipzor light device......if you use it the minute you have a tingle it doesn't develop any further. Didn't have it on me last year during the horror camping trip!

Howhot · 05/11/2018 18:34

Thank you shelves, I'll happily give that a try!

Racecardriver · 05/11/2018 18:44

No cold sores. Don’t think anyone in my family has them as far as I can remember but maybe we all have them but are asymptomatic. I can’t say I really notice them on other people tbh. I have come back clean on std tests so assuming I don’t have genital herpes either. Never slept with anyone who gets them but it wouldn’t really bother me so long as they told me before sleeping with me and they didn’t have sez whilst having the actual sores to limit chances of passing them on.

RaspberryRippleCrisps · 05/11/2018 19:00

I've had type 1 (oral herpes) since I was 18. My first attack was horrendous,I got them inside my mouth and could barely eat for a week. I felt awful and had to take several days off college. My dentist referred me to the dental hospital in Leicester Square, London (no longer there). They prescribed me a mouthwash which I had to use 3 times a day. It worked miracles,I felt relief after the first time I used it,and within 5 days, all the sores had cleared up. The doctors at the dental hospital were extremely interested in my case,as apparently it's quite rare (or it was then, back in 1981) to get them to the degree that I did inside my mouth. They asked if I would allow them to take photos of them for teaching purposes! Of course,I agreed.
Since that first bout,I've thankfully never had them inside my mouth again, but about once a year,I do get a sore on my lower lip on the right hand side, always in the same place. I find the main trigger for my outbreaks is strong sunlight,so I'm always more prone to them in the summer. I have to remember to apply factor 50 sunblock to my lips and surrounding area before going outside. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work.

Ioki · 05/11/2018 19:06

I’ve been told I have type 1 as, when I’m very run down or stressed, I get large canker sore type ulcers on my inner (mouth!) lip. They’re very deep and very painful - usually take about six weeks to go. I’ve never had the full on cold sores etc...

HollySwift · 05/11/2018 19:16

Oddly, despite my husband getting cold sores at least once a year, I’ve never had one, or any sign of genital herpes either!

Wonder if I’m one of the non symptom showing carriers tbh.
