We were going to get a gift for our neighbours who are Sikh. I thought they celebrate Diwali.I’m now not sure which religion celebrates it Sikh or Hindu. Can anyone help me out?

Sikhs do celebrate Diwali.

Do you know them enough to give them a gift?

They do generally celebrate Christmas, as well. Not for its religious meaning, but as a Cultural event and a time for Family and Friends.

A Sikh friend once told me that Sikhism was descended from Hinduism - not sure how much.

This was when we were chatting about prohibited foods. I asked if Sikhs had any, and he said there was some who didn't eat beef as the cow is sacred in Hinduism. (He blushed slightly when he said it).

I love that Diwali is so close to Bonfire night ....

Ohyesiam, their Guru was released from Prison. He requested that Hindu Princes that were being held were released with him. So it is a time of mutual celebration.

@Birdsgottafly** thanks

It is a Hindu festival, but many Sikhs celebrate Diwali too.

Sikhism developed with influences from Hindu and Muslim cultures.

Petitepamplemousse · 04/11/2018 21:47

Both Sikhs and Hindus celebrate Diwali but I wouldn’t get them a Diwali gift if you’re not Sikh. Get them a Christmas present later in the year instead.

Google could have helped you out massively Confused

." I asked if Sikhs had any, and he said there was some who didn't eat beef as the cow is sacred in Hinduism"

I was really good friends with a Sikh Family and they put the not eating of Beef down to, again, Cultural, regional beliefs.

The higher Castes didn't eat Beef. They showed they were superior by having enforced food restrictions. Only people who can easily afford food, can choose to stop eating a major food group. The lower Castes followed, in a "keeping up with the Jones" type of way.

All the Sikhs that I know celebrate it big styleee.

A box of nice sweets/chocs is a good gift to give.

Thank you for all your replies. It confused me when I googled it and it said both celebrate it but mainly Hindu. I think I won’t buy for this one! Thank you for all your helpful replies.
