Thank you. I will watch it on catch-up. Have a book of his poems on Kindle and am gradually reading them.

ChocolateTearDrops · 04/11/2018 11:10

Thank you!

The centenary of his death. 'What passing bells for those who die as cattle'.

Thank you for letting me know Op.

Robotlady · 04/11/2018 13:35

Thanks for this, I didn't know. Ready to watch.

Elderflower14 · 04/11/2018 13:43

Patricia Routledge is reading some of his poems. I love her!

Really enjoyed this. Would query 'I vow to thee my country' though. Great tune but I don't think Wilfrid Owen would have advocated fighting an entirely pointless war based on unquestioning patriotism.

OwlService · 04/11/2018 14:47

Thank you, I've just finished watching.

Many years ago, I studied his poems for A Level and visited the village where he died and is buried.

CoolCarrie · 04/11/2018 14:49

It was very moving, such a terrible waste, poor man died right at the end of the war.

CoolCarrie · 04/11/2018 14:50

On this date 4th November.

Robotlady · 04/11/2018 14:53

Huge fan of Patricia Routledge anyway, but her reading of Anthem for Doomed Youth was just heartbreaking.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/11/2018 14:56

Very apt to have Patricia Routledge reading Wilfred Owen's poetry. From the same neck of the woods. I remember studying Owen at school. A few of the streets in Birkenhead are named after him.

One hundred years ago today this great man died. He was injured whilst serving and sent to Craiglockhart Hospital in Scotland to recover from shellshock. Whilst there he met Siegfried Sassoon another war poet. Wilfred was given the choice about whether to return to the front and fight and he chose to go to replace Siegfried. He only wrote to tell his friend when he got there. He was killed the week before Armistice Day. He was leading a charge at Sambre Oise. His parents tragically received the telegram with news of his death at home in Shrewsbury as the Church bells rang out for peace. I studied Wilfred's poetry at school and it had a profound effect on me. When it came time to choose a name for my second son I knew I wanted an old fashioned name and Wilfred seemed a perfect choice. My Wilfred knows why he has his name and is as proud as I am. Next Sunday I will proudly stand at our village war memorial and read the last letter Wilfred wrote to his mother on October 31st 1918. One day I plan to take my Wilfred to see the other Wilfred's grave in Northern France.... " My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity.
All a poet can do today is warn.
Red lips are not so red As the stained stones kissed by the English dead." Just put this on my FB page.... 😪 😪 😪 😪

Thanks Elderflower. I caught a bit of this earlier. I remember studying him and Siegfried Sassoon at school. I didn’t know he died a week before Armistace Day and that his parents received his telegram on that day. How heartbreaking that must have been.

CoolCarrie · 04/11/2018 19:47

That is a lovely tribute Elderflower. You have a special son to carry the name.

woodhill · 04/11/2018 19:48
