Bought a car. Hate it. Can I get a refund?

So upset. I bought a car yesterday, 18 months old from a dealer. Lots of issues but basically I discovered after driving all afternoon that I have made a huge mistake and I hate the car. Is there any way I can take it back and ask for my money back (less deposit) or is this not possible with used cars?

Meant to say in the last paragraph...

I have certainly never heard of a dealer letting someone take it for one and a half to 2 hours and do their bleeding weekly shop in it! (Like the poster said at the very bottom of page 2 of this thread.(

^^My dealer gives me test car for weekends at a time, never mind a couple of hours.....

FartingInTheFence · 04/11/2018 15:26

Quite a few car franchise dealers do 48 hour test drives.

Lexus is famed for it and I've done it several times over the last 15 years or so when test driving their models.

To be fair I did say I wasn't sure if you could complain about faults, and then I went and found the which? guide to the consumer rights act 2015. That talks about things not marching the description or not being expected for the age of car, neither or which seem to be the issue here. You do have rights with some faults though, apologies if I gave the wrong impression.

I took my car for over an hour on a test drive, drove it all the way home and back to the dealer a different route because I needed to see that it fit my needs before spending 8 grand. why would you spend so much money on a 10 minute decision that's just daft

CaptSkippy · 04/11/2018 16:24

I test drove my current car for 2 hours. I wouldn't trust a seller who doesn't even allow you an hour to test-drive.

MrsJBaptiste · 04/11/2018 17:27

Wow, some of you are lucky with your test drives. Cars we've taken out often don't have enough petrol in them to go more than 10 miles!

To the poster who took their test drive to the supermarket, did the car dealer come in there with you too?

LordPickle · 04/11/2018 17:34

Yes you can get a refund. Last year we bought a car on finance and had it for 5 days then we noticed a weird sound when we went over 60 mph. We took it back to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong with it by we said we don't care and don't want a car that rattles over 60. They said ok and took the car back and cancelled the finance.

CaptSkippy · 04/11/2018 17:39

I put petrol in it myself and returned it with a full tank. They leave the tanks pretty empty, because usually used cars are sitting still for quite a while .

WackyRacesWoo · 04/11/2018 17:46

We definitely stipulated that the car had to be in perfect condition for its age and smoke and pet free and asked him to add this to the order form. We have a copy of this so it may make a difference.

Has the car been registered to you already? If the dealer completed the paperwork yesterday would that also impact on a request to return it (ie it’s considered to have an extra owner)?

loplop · 04/11/2018 18:01

I'm another one who's never ever had more than a 10/15 minute test drive (along with someone from the company sitting next to me doing the sales pitch). Clearly I'm in the wrong income bracket!

dawnc27 · 04/11/2018 18:05

ah i never thought about the dla to pip change over, my mum is an oap so unaffected by the changes

He wasn't in the car - which was a Nissan Juke, for those interested.

You ain't getting shopping for 2 people in the back of a Juke

Also, don't forget to check the road fund license situation as many disabled (not just mobility) owners had zero.

LordPickle · 08/11/2018 19:38

What was the outcome OP?

WackyRacesWoo · 09/11/2018 10:47

They have taken the car away for a full valet and they are looking into fitting a foot plate for me. The M.D. was waiting for us when we took it back and was very apologetic about the fact that it hadn’t been cleaned and there was visible evidence of a dog, despite written evidence that the car would be pet-free. They have had it all week and still waiting to hear back from them.
