Where would be the best place to sell a new chrome book?

It was bought for school and my dc is not attending that school now so it isn’t used. I see many for sale on eBay but I also hear a lot of horror stories, one on a thread last week where a poster had sold an iPhone and the buyer came back demanding a refund that it didn’t work after a week....

I don’t have any shops like CEX near me, would eBay be ok? Iv never sold anything if significant value on eBay so any issues wouldn’t impact me financially.... any suggestions?

Chrome book on eBay as a new seller - you'll attract the scammers. You'll possibly end up with no Chrome book and also down the money. Really would advise not the eBay route for this.

Ilmb · 04/11/2018 08:25

I’m not a new seller, I have over 800 in feedback all 100%. Why would I end up with no chromebook? I’d only accept PayPal..... where else would you suggest?

Bumping?

If it’s brand new and unused can you return it to where it was purchased?

I’d sell it on eBay, take lots of photos before hand, make note of the serial number and things and only sell to someone with more than a certain amount of feedback and 100%.
Send it insured signed for delivery and it should be fine.

Ilmb · 04/11/2018 13:21

No it was bought through the school and they won’t buy it back Iv asked...

How would I prove it’s brand new if bought through a school? I don’t have a recipt, paid via direct debit...I don’t need to give that information do I? It’s a genuine sale, I don’t need it. Already have a laptop and kids have tablets so it’s juts sitting there and I could do with the money!

Could you possibly sell it through the school? Would another parent want it for their child?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2018 14:02

Why would I end up with no chromebook? I’d only accept PayPal

It works like this: Buyer reports item as SNAD and Paypal put a hold on the money. When asked to return it for a refund, buyer uses tracking to send you back a cheap fake, just the empty box or even a similar sized wrapped book so they can "prove" it was returned ... that way they get to keep your real Chromebook and the money too

The countless horror stories about ebay scammers are there for a reason - please don't even think of selling something like this on there

Ilmb · 04/11/2018 14:03

Oh god I had no idea....

How else could I sell it then??

OP posts:
ChocolateTearDrops · 04/11/2018 14:08

Thanks @PuzzledandPissedoff you've explained it far better than I can! Grin

Facebook selling? That way the buyer can see it working and is a cash purchase?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2018 14:08

Gumtree perhaps? I realise ebay own the site, but at least it would be sold as seen and for cash only

As with Facebook selling you'd probably attract endless timewasters who'd insist they want it and not turn up, but at least there'd be no Paypal to snatch the money back off you

Ilmb · 04/11/2018 14:12

Ok Iv never sold on gumtree (or bought!) how does that work? Place an ad like eBay but people pay cash on pick up? You don’t post items?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2018 14:15

Another thing on ebay, for anyone who still wants to risk selling there ... make sure you set your selling preferences very strictly, not only for areas you'll post to but also to exclude buyers with non-paying strikes against them, those who've cancelled bids, anyone with less feedback than you're comfortable with and many more

I once stumbled - still not sure how - on a tally of bidders who'd been blocked this way on my account and the list just went on and on Hmm

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2018 14:24

There's a great "how to" link for selling on Gumtree below - and yes, personally I'd make it strictly cash only

www.wikihow.com/Place-an-Ad-on-Gumtree

Ilmb · 04/11/2018 14:35

Thanks for the link. So they have to come to your house.. that’s ok too? Yes I have had people pick things up from eBay from my house but I still don’t like that!

OP posts:
Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2018 14:47

If you sell locally I guess you could offer to deliver it, but since that would probably involve wasted journeys for people who "forgot" I wouldn't bother

FWIW I'm not keen on buyers having my address either, but I'm honestly not sure if you have to declare it on Gumtree? Obviously the site owners know it, but I thought the ads just carried a phone number and/or email address?

Ilmb · 04/11/2018 14:49

But they would need my address to come and collect it....?

OP posts:
Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2018 14:53

Well, yes - as mentioned, unless you want to risk wasting time on "not in's when you get there" they'll need to have your address at some point

At least with Gumtree you can try to get some idea of what they're like via the phone first, though

Ilmb · 14/11/2018 20:50

Iv had no joy on gumtree, what if I put it on eBay and say cash only?

OP posts:
Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/11/2018 22:39

Only thing with cash is they'd have to collect from your home ... are you okay with that now?

There's also the risk a buyer would still pay you via Paypal, hoping you'd let them get away with it. If that happened, the only sensible thing would be to refund them, remind them it was strictly cash only and hope they kept to it

36degrees · 15/11/2018 00:24

I've handed over items sold on eBay for cash in a mainline train station and a shopping centre cafe when I didn't feel comfortable at home/giving out my address.

Ilmb · 15/11/2018 06:49

I’ve had people come to my home before.... never ft’rigjt’ with it but thennever has any problems.... it would be the same with gumtree though too?

OP posts:
Ilmb · 15/11/2018 06:56

Just been on CEX website and it says they buy them for £50!! It’s worth £300! Don’t know what to do?!

OP posts:
Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/11/2018 12:46

On another thread, someone mentioned an online selling site called Shpock

I've never used it personally but wonder if it would be worth a look?

Ilmb · 15/11/2018 13:06

Iv heard of them but never used ... if I sold on eBay, cash on collection, what could happen? If I put on photo of it turned on.... they check it when they arrive.... could I still end up with trouble?

OP posts:
Ilmb · 15/11/2018 13:07

And what about a free ad? We have a local one...?
