Recommendations for coffee subscriptions please?

My parents are elderly and have all the 'stuff' they could want in their house, so I thought it would be nice to get them a coffee subscription as a Christmas present this year, but I've been googling and I'm a bit confused by all the options! Does anyone have any recommendations for a good one which would make a nice gift please? Thank you Smile

Old Spike coffee is delicious and provides support for the homeless.

Hasbean has been excellent for the past few years. Great coffee and appear to be highly supportive of their suppliers.

(No personal connection except money spent and coffee drunk!)

I've had a look at both of those, thank you but I'm still confused. What I want is a service which sends different coffee each month with some information about the coffee. Not sure if either of those do that but happy to be corrected if I'm wrong?

I have the Pact Coffee micro-lot plan, which sends out a different coffee each time and I think still has information about the coffee. The coffee is generally very good. www.pactcoffee.com

I've used pact for a couple of years. I get a fortnightly subscription which is £5.95 a time. I get the cheaper roast and only fortnightly because otherwise it seems a bit dear. It does feel like a special treat though and I like the fact it comes not wrapped in tons of plastic. It's also letterbox friendly so no need to sit at home. It's easy to pause or cancel the subscription. It's about the size of a normal £3 bag from a supermarket.

Hasbean sends a different type of coffee each week / month ( you select frequency). The basic info about the coffee is on the bag, and then there are online videos about each coffee on the website that you can watch for more details.

I have a monthly subscription with Workshop. Their coffee is amazing. One of the best coffee places I know - and given I live in east London, the competition is pretty tough!

Coffees subscriptions or other food subscriptions are really brilliant as it is a gift that gets used up. If they drink coffee it is something you also know they'll make use of.

I really love KaffeBox. They send out two different beans from different Scandinavian roasters every month. It is light roast if you like that

They also have an advent calendar which is brilliant

Twoday Coffee Roasters in Bristol. We used to buy from their shop, then we moved and they posted bags up to us. They send it out from their website now, beans or ground to how you like it. So good, and lovely people.

What would people recommend for a filter machine? I have used coffee subscriptions before and found them a bit weak (not sure if they were supposed to for a different sort of coffee maker or do I need a certain kind of grind, when I got into the supermarket I just buy ground).

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/11/2018 16:36

What would people recommend for a filter machine?

I use Nude Espresso's East Blend and ask them to grind it for filter (they have options for paper filter, cafetiere etc). This is my absolute favourite coffee. I've been going to their (original) cafe for about 10 years now and their flat white is still my absolute favourite in London.

Or occasionally (i.e. I haven't got time to order online or go to Nude), I run across the road to the supermarket and buy some ready ground Carte Noir. I started drinking Carte Noir when I last lived in France and visitors always said how good my coffee was. I was delighted when they started selling it in the UK. I should add that I'm usually a pretentious coffee twat who refuses to drink coffee if the beans were roasted more than 6 weeks ago, but I do love Carte Noir for filter coffee.

Neither of these coffees are 'weak' if you use enough coffee. I am notorious for making my filter coffee like rocket fuel and these two brands have never let me down. Just don't drink too much of it. Wink

Thanks all! I went with hasbean in the end, mainly on the basis that I can pay monthly by direct debit and so spread the cost of the present :) I have ordered whole beans and I plan to buy them a grinder and maybe some other coffee-related stuff to open on the day! Very pleased. Thanks for the recommendations

Sounds like a fabulous present!

I’ve tried a bunch of coffee subscriptions, but Bayou City Coffee is hands down my favorite. The quality of the beans is top-tier, and their roasts are super fresh—like, you can smell the difference fresh out of the bag. What really makes it the best though is how flexible it is. You can pause, skip, or change it up anytime without a hassle. Plus, they actually care—you can tell it’s a small biz that puts love into what they do. I look forward to every delivery like a kid on Christmas lol. If you’re into good coffee and hate running out, definitely check it out.
