I have a 45 min drive to work, I'm looking for audio books to distract me on the journey, nothing too chick flic, horror or crime. Certainly nothing with someone dying as I recently lost a loved one. Any ideas?

How about Jane Eyre? The Juliet Stevenson recording on Audible is terrific.

littlebillie · 03/11/2018 21:09

Handmaids tale is brilliant

AliceRR · 03/11/2018 21:15

Anything by Margaret Atwood of Kazuhiro Ishguru

The Martian was good

Time Travellers Wife

I like Jodi Picoult too altho seem to enjoy her audiobooks (the ones I’ve listened to) less than reading her novels

Count of Monte Cristo
Woman in White

I have also listened to the entire Game of Thrones series and most of Robin Hobb's books.

Currently listening to Arabian Nights.

David Hewson has written novelised versions of Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet which are narrated on Audible by Richard Armitage...they are brilliant and definitely not sleep inducing!

He's also done Macbeth, narrated by Alun Cumming iirc.

Apologies...only skim read your post so maybe not the best choices, but mg worth considering for another time Flowers

NoSquirrels · 03/11/2018 21:20

You’ll probs my dismiss this as chick lit but The Break by Marisn Keyes is excellent - funny, heartbreaking, beautifully observed and the narration is excellent.

FayKnights · 03/11/2018 21:26

I was recommended The Various Haunts of Men by Susan Hill on here, just finished and it was excellent.

Mailfuckoff · 04/11/2018 05:03

Thank you all
I've read a lot of Marion keyes and margeeet Atwood but not considered the audio books, that's worth a shot!
I'll give these all a go

I love proper epics-the longer the better- partly to do with feeling I'm getting my money's worth! CJ Samsom's historical detective stories are great. Elisabeth Jane Howard's family saga The Cazalet Chronicles is wonderful. People do die in both though.Sad

StarfishSandwich · 04/11/2018 05:23

I certainly wouldn’t bother reading them but if I feel I need cheering up I listen to comedians’ autobiographies. Guaranteed a laugh and not too heavy.

Usually I listen to thrillers and Scandi noir though which definitely isn’t helpful for you 😬

StarfishSandwich · 04/11/2018 05:24

Bertrand I definitely know what you mean about getting your money’s worth! If a book is over 20 hours I’m thrilled!

BitOfFun · 04/11/2018 05:37

Have you considered factual audiobooks? I love a good long history book.

SofiaAmes · 04/11/2018 05:38

I love Jojo Moyes, but they are a bit chicklit. If you are looking for funny, well written and light try anything by Jonas Jonasson or Fredrik Backman. Don't forget that these days you can check audiobooks out of the library (online).

mrbob · 04/11/2018 05:52

Big little lies was great. The narrator was annoying when I started but got used it. Seems like it is chick lit at the start but it really isn’t! So gripping and lots of twists and turns

mrbob · 04/11/2018 05:54

Don’t forget podcasts too. The dollop is my current fave for out loud giggles (LOTS of swearing)

fatpatsthong · 04/11/2018 09:14

If you like Stephen fry (and I know not everyone does) I liked Mythos.

Also second podcasts - my dad wrote a porno is a favourite and there is a Julia Davis one which is utter filth.

Also the radio iPlayer ap let's you download stuff and there are often some good plays and serials knocking about.

BertrandRussell · 04/11/2018 13:50

Just downloaded a JoJo Moyes-thank you!
Anyone using Audible, it's in a two for one deal at the moment.

I can't recommend the Cazalet Chronicles highly enough, by the way. Our whole family enjoyed them-including teenage DS! But dd and I have listened loads of times.

CharleyFarleyy · 04/11/2018 14:13

I have just finished The Innocent Wife by Amy Lloyd. Really enjoyed it Smile
