The worst viral infection you have ever had?

I’m one week into a viral infection, as diagnosed by the doctor, and I’m so.fed.up. The symptoms vary, and come and go, and I just need to know I’m not alone.

I have aching limbs, pain in scalp, pain in base of skull, full ears and fluid in ears, exhaustion, weak legs and a horrible, marshmallow head coupled with a swaying sensation. Shaky feeling. Also a bit of nausea. It’s joyous.

I just need to know that I’ll get better, that someone else has been through this. I’ve had to cancel a weekend away and feeling very sorry for myself. Sad face.

for me, fairly typical/common viral infections have got worse with age. I had a cold-type virus a year ago and was out of bed in about 3 days, but still very symptomatic and totally wiped out after a couple of weeks.

I had proper flu in my twenties and was bedridden and hallucinating for 72hrs, but bounced back far quicker.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 04/11/2018 09:36

Oh you poor things, they’re all horrendous! Do any of you know where you caught them from? Eg work in a hospital? Or from a sick relative? Or was it just randomly picked up from you know not where?

bellinibobble · 04/11/2018 09:52

I had a sinusitis thing on and off for about 6 weeks last winter.

I’m sure taking multivitamins was the only thing that helped me in the end.

I had flu about 12 years ago. Was v I'll for 3 weeks and it took me nearly a year to get over it. Truly horrendous
I'm battering the door down to get my flu jab as soon as it's out every year now. I'm terrified of getting it again

Cauliflowersqueeze · 04/11/2018 09:55

Flu a few years ago.

Felt like I’d been hit by a truck. Lay in bed for 4 days sleeping and staring and feeling like total crap.

Unicornandbows · 04/11/2018 09:58

I just got over mine well the worst part is gone.. Still have phlegm I keep coughing up. I think it took me three weeks and I am also pregnant with HG.

There is light at the end of the tunnel make sure you drink plenty of fluids warm baths and lots of hot water bottles

diymania · 04/11/2018 10:08

I had some sort of virus that started with a thumping headache that I only got when I stood up. I was due to give a presentation at work and I thought it was just stress so ignored it. Got worse over the course of a week and then turned into excruciating headache and high temperature. DH wanted me to go to dr but I just couldn’t fathom moving. Thankfully the peak of it only last 48h and then I was fine.

Whitelisbon · 04/11/2018 10:09

I had flu 3 years ago when I was pregnant with dc5.
I spent almost a week on the sofa, unable to do anything more than crawl to the toilet and back, and cry.
Went to the Drs after a week or so, as dh made me, and the Dr told me I probably should have been in hospital.
I'd developed a chest, sinus, ear and throat infection, and needed 6 weeks of antibiotics to clear them.
If someone had come along and offered to put me out of my misery I'd have agreed. It was hideous.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 04/11/2018 10:09

I had Flu (real proper flu), an ear infection, laryngitis and bronchitis over a 3 week period last Christmas. It was horrendous, by far the most awful poor health period I have ever had and it took me until mid February to feel halfway normal again. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone

I’ve had the flu jab this year!!

beanaseireann · 04/11/2018 10:18

Strep throat.
It was like knives cutting your throat every time you swallowed.
You swallow a lot, did you know ?
You won't notice til you get strep throat !

vampirethriller · 04/11/2018 10:36

Swine flu. I was at my dads and couldn't leave for 3 weeks, I was in the spare room hallucinating giant bugs dropping from the ceiling/men trying to get into the house. Lost 2 stone in a month.

Snufflebabe05 · 04/11/2018 10:45

Yes, my OH has been very good, making sure I eat. I’ve managed to hang up washing each day and fill/empty dishwasher, but have to rest straight afterwards as it just wipes me out. I feel like i get little bursts of energy, then feel shattered afterwards.

I think I feel ever so slightly better today than yesterday. Having a berocca now and praying that it might be starting to think about easing off. Still so bloody weak and jelly legs.

I don't have the worst virus, but it's very frustrating. Started with nausea and slightly upset stomach, has morphed into kidney/ bladder pain, exhaustion, lack of appetite, earache, general aches/pains. An odd collection of symptoms.

iklboo · 04/11/2018 11:03

Swine flu. DH had it as well. We had to send DS to MIL's as we were too ill to look after him properly.

ILoveDaveGrohl · 04/11/2018 11:08

Stomach flu. For two weeks I was so weak I couldn't stand up and would shit and vomit every bit of fluid out. Had lots of hallucinations And ended up with internal bleeding

practicallyperfectinmyway · 04/11/2018 18:18

@jaimebravo same here, Swine flu a few years ago knocked me for 6, headaches, muscle cramps, could barely move and was in bed for a week at it's worst.

I then got pneumonia after a chest infection (post swine flu) wouldn't shift - the whole illness period lasted about 2 months and then another 3 months to get my breathing/respiratory system back to normal. I lost a stone in weight.

Boy was I glad to get that over with.

MsForestierinParis · 04/11/2018 18:23

Flu as a child. I lost the use of my legs and was very sick. It was Christmas and I'd got a bike that year. I could only stroke it.

Tonsillitis 16 years ago was not much fun either but at least it wasn't Christmas.

haverhill · 04/11/2018 18:24

Flu about 20 years ago. I felt ill for weeks after the worst of it was over.

VictoriaBun · 04/11/2018 18:29

Had flu a few times in my life. I am also a fainter so as soon as I managed to stand up off I'd go. I 've also fainted off the toilet a few times, and I also have a permanent dent in my head from fainting and banging myself.

thaegumathteth · 04/11/2018 18:31

Swine flu
Glandular fever
Hand foot and mouth

thenightsky · 04/11/2018 18:34

Only had flu twice in my life. First time was as a child which I can't remember much about.

Second time was when I was a student nurse about 35 years ago. I went into work for the 7am to 2pm shift. I felt a bit fuzzy headed on my way there. By 10am I was in one of the spare beds. I had to get a taxi back to the nurses' home at 2pm as I could barely walk. I crawled on hands and knees up to my room where I stayed for the next 3 days, shivering under 3 jumpers and having wild nightmares and hallucinations.

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 04/11/2018 19:12

I have vague recollections of having, twice, some kind of awful viral infection type things over the years. Both were very similar and around winter time. One was when I had an ebf baby and he relied completely on me for his food. All I remember for a few days was sleeping on the sofa, waking to feed son and eating when I felt capable.

Thankfully dh had managed to get holidays off work and he looked after older son and made meals. I also vaguely remember my MIL being around a lot and the ironing board being used, I think she helped keep us going too.

It does get better, but it's really difficult while you're in the situation to see out the other end of it.

Also, after ds2 was born I had a nasty, nasty chest infection. Could barely move or talk and was so bad that when I got to the doctors to ask for an appointment they had me seen immediately. Had to get iron tablets and nice strong antibiotics for that one, the doctor was surprised I had managed to get dressed and made it into a car, never mind was still standing by the time I got to the surgery. That was just a cold that didn't need any medication that turned into a massive infection when I gave birth. Sometimes things can develop from one thing into another if they last long enough, so just keep an eye out in case your symptoms change.

Snufflebabe05 · 05/11/2018 11:45

Thanks everyone. Tried to put away a weeks worth of clean clothes last night. Got halfway through, and was breathless, nauseous, and so dizzy. Went to bed a couple of hours later and slept for 10 hours.

This morning, whilst the aches have eased, I’m still exhausted, with full, popping ears and horrible swaying/dizziness.

Another day of resting ahead. I have to be positive that I feel slightly better than a few days though, yeah?

Vaccine modified measles a few weeks back.

Felt exactly like you, plus temp of 39.8 and rash.

I thought I had sepsis and was dying.
