If you live in a flat do you find people...

...look down on you a little bit and assume you'll eventually move out of your "starter home" and into a house?

It doesn't bother me what people think, but this has been my experience and I'm curious if any other flat dwellers experience the same thing?

I live in a large 1960s two bed flat, with my husband and young daughter. We may eventually move but don't have to. We're pretty happy here and have good neighbours so feel lucky.

We live in a flat, well a maisonette that we recently bought in the place we wanted to live which is hideously expensive. We have a private garden and parking. It is small but quirky and I love it. Location is everything to me.

We own a 5 bedroom flat in zone 1 in London. It's a serviced building and the flat is split on two levels. We also have a private shared garden. We chose a flat as we both need to be very central for work and also for a particular school we wanted. Most people we know feel sorry for us because of how expensive everything in our area is, not because we live in a flat.

Completely agree. My first home after uni was a flat. I loved it and none of the houses I have lived in since have been quite as perfect. I live in a VERY aspirational area, so unless you have a 4 bed semi and a city working husband you are automatically poor. I reckon if we went American and called them apartments they would sound more appealing. Flat is a bit .. flat really.

I had a work colleague in England who regularly lobbed insults about 'Glasgow tenement dwellers' when he didn't like how an argument was going. I didn't live in a tenement, but wished I did especially if it was in one like that!

In the city where I live a “flat” can be anything from a one bed in a modern block to a five bedroomed apartment in a Georgian building. Whatever it is, looking down on anyone, wherever they live is snobbery/inverted snobbery & unintelligent. As ever, ‘content of character’ reigns.

Not really - currently single though, and a lot of friends are renting. Late twenties though. I guess I hope I'll buy a house at some point, but currently enjoy my flat! Sharing costs and heat and all that!

Wouldn't look down on people living in flats. I live in a bungalow and people take the piss out of that all the timeWink
Currently staying in a very nice flat in Rome and have been renting a penthouse apartment with a roof terrace in Spain. I thought we might buy something like this in the future but in both cases being able to hear other people pretty much all the time has made me realise it's not for me.

Terrace houses are like a block of flats on their side in many cases
