Seen this twice this evening.

'Etc' is short for 'et cetera'. I have no idea what 'ect' means!

Obviously I haven't corrected/posted on the specific threads as that's a cunty thing to do. But really! Do people not know that? Do they not know that it's 'et cetera' and therefore that 'ect' makes no sense at all?!

Oh yes, ‘per say’ bloody gets my goat too!

And when people say ‘expresso’ and other similar mispronunciations, that bloody gets on my nerves too...

And while we’re at it - why has ask become aks - genuine question.

redzebra10 · 03/11/2018 07:43

i've seen lose spelt loose that many times i'm starting to question if it's me that spelling it wrong

JingsMahBucket · 03/11/2018 08:00

@redzebra10 yes! When I read things on here I automatically switch them in my brain and immediately think the person meant the other word. Whenever someone on MN ever does it right, there’s a jolt/record scratch in my brain to start reading the sentence again.

canyouhearthedrums · 03/11/2018 08:02

I don't think hearing it will overcome the misuse; I have only heard it pronounced 'eksetra' which only reinforces the ect. Also, plenty of people hear per se an d look what happened to that.

SymphonyofShadows · 03/11/2018 08:06

ECT makes me clench, 'alot' instead of 'a lot' grinds my gears too.

JingsMahBucket · 03/11/2018 08:20

OH! And what the hell is up what I’ve been reading lately on here: “incase”?? Those are two separate words!! “In case.” There’s another set of words I’ve seen like that but I’m (gratefully) drawing a blank right now.

A580Hojas · 03/11/2018 08:43

Try not to get so worked up about things like this. It's just so trivial (relatively).

DreamsofJacaranda · 03/11/2018 23:22

Whilst we’re indulging in a little pedantry, may I add that the misuse of affect/effect, which seems to be so widespread now, is irritating me beyond all reason, along with the ubiquitous “I was sat” instead of “I was sitting”?

No, just no.

Definitely not!

See my post on another thread - there's a Surrey bus company named Buses Excetera. Drives me potty, I tell you.
