Sleeping downstairs temporarily

Due to an impending minor operation and poor health generally, as of next week im going to need to sleep downstairs as I'm not going to be able to manage the stairs (downstairs bathroom).

Trouble is, I only have 2 x 2 seater sofas which I can't lie down on. My original plan was to take DD1s single bed downstairs and let her sleep in my room, but I can't physically move it let alone get it downstairs.

My next option is to buy a cheap something to sleep on, but money is very tight, plus I have no idea what would be best. I'm going to need to be on complete bed rest for 2-3 weeks, so will need to be comfortable.

I'm a bit stuck on how this is going to work Sad

I personally find air beds comfortable enough, but I know that some people don't.
How about just your DD's mattress, without the bed? I slept for years on a mattress on the floor and never had a problem.

Could you ask one of the neighbours to help? Alternatively does your local council offer a handyman service?

Who is going to be helping with your care needs whilst you are on bed rest?

Hope the op and recovery go well.

NoLogicInThis · 02/11/2018 20:44

I also think just a mattress rather than a air bed.

You say money is tight, but have you considered asking a local man and van service if they'd move it downstairs? Would be about £30.

Stompythedinosaur · 02/11/2018 20:45

I'd just move the mattress downstairs too.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/11/2018 20:46

Can you put the sofa cushions on the floor and put a mattress topper on them? Or would it be too difficult for you to get up from that low down?

BrickByBrick · 02/11/2018 20:46

Not sure the type of operation you are having OP but getting up from a mattress on the floor may not be a realistic option.

Can you ask a neighbour to help you move it, or do you have a local ‘Community help line’ or similar. We live in a very small town but there are a number of ‘good neighbour schemes’ around.

Bunnybigears · 02/11/2018 20:50

Do you have anyone who could help move the bed? Im sure someone you know would help if asked. I would help you move the bed and I dont even know you. If there is no one post on facebook for someone to do the job it should only be £20 to £30 I would have thought.

My original plan was to take DD1s single bed downstairs and let her sleep in my room, but I can't physically move it let alone get it downstairs.

This is still the best plan. No one who can help, OP? Couple of mates? Otherwise pay a man with a van type who’ll be used to shifting furniture - explain he’ll need to bring someone to help. It won’t be too expensive.

Hmmm, think I'll have to find a handyman. I don't know why I didn't think of that!

I think the mattress on the floor will be too low for me to get up from, and as I'll be going to the bathroom a fair bit, ease of movement is essential.

Re my care needs, I think I should be ok. My 2 DDs will be home with me, and it's in part because of them that I'm not being admitted - there's no one to care for them if I'm not there. May well mean we live on soup and takeaways for a few days, but that's not the end of the world.

That's a good idea NoSquirrels. If there's no neighbour or friend you can call on to shift the bed, OP, pay someone to do it. It'll take them 10 mins and be cheaper than buying a new thing. A teenager or two would do it.

It won't take 2 grown men to move a single bed.

For a single night, just sofa cushions lined up on the floor work surprisingly well, but you need something better after your op.
