Is my child too tall for it's car seat?

Child in question is nearly 4 and 15kg. Car seat has a limit of 18kg and is a stage 0-1 seat I think (suitable from birth). Child is light for its age and quite tall and skinny. His head pokes out about 2inches above the top of the seat. Should I get a bigger one?

Yes. A high back booster is more suitable for a 4yr old.

dementedpixie · 02/11/2018 19:06

Once the ears/ eyes are in line with the back of the seat then they are too tall for it. A 123 seat would keep them harnessed until 18kg or you could use a high backed booster as long as they are 15kg

Does the headrest in your seat go up?

You an get harnessed boosters that you can remove the harness from once they are 18kg. Something like the recaro young sport.

Rear or forward facing seat?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/11/2018 19:13

It??

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 02/11/2018 19:18

Of course he should be in a bigger seat !

littledinaco · 02/11/2018 19:23

The absolute minimum age to move into a high back booster is 4/4.5 as regardless of height/weight their hips aren’t developed to hold the belt in the correct position so in a crash, there is a risk of them sliding under the seat.

They also need to be mature enough to sit correctly at all times, so no slouching, leaning forwards, playing with the seatbelt, etc.

If you join the Facebook group ‘car seat advice U.K.’ you will get specialist advice on whether he has actually outgrown his current seat and which is a good next seat for your car/his height, weight, etc.

Cheby · 02/11/2018 19:33

Second joining that Facebook group. It really depends on the seat. Your DC is well within the weight limit, so it depends if your particular seat is outgrown for height when the top of their head is out of the seat or when the ears are in line with the top of the seat. It completely depends on the make/model.

Some ridiculous comments above; you should only be moving a child into a forward facing seat at age 4 at the earliest, and then not from a harnessed seat into a HBB until they are sensible enough to sit properly in their seat for the whole journey, without slumping or wriggling around.

Thanks, I will look at the fb group.

^ I think the seat is an older version of this. It doesn't have a head rest. The one thing I am sure about is that he still needs a 5 point harness because he's a pickle.

Some seats allow the head to be above the back of the seat. The maxi cosi axiss for example.
Your best bet is to contact britax for confirmation on the height restriction.

Yumyumbananas · 03/11/2018 19:10

Britax MaxWay is a similar seat but rear facing and harnessed until 25kg.

ijustwantasofa · 03/11/2018 19:13

That Car Seat Advice Uk Facebook group has a list of harness high back booster seats that will work til 25kg - both rear facing and forward facing. I just used it to buy mine! My dc is definitely not mature enough to sit properly without a harness (most aren't at age 4, I expect) and that makes them less safe.

littledinaco · 03/11/2018 19:20

It won’t be just his total height, it will depend on whether he has long torso/long legs.
You can post photos of him in the seat on the f/b group and the experts will be able to tell you if he had outgrown the seat height wise.
Or Britax are usually helpful if you phone/email them.

If you are looking to buy a new seat anyway, a 25kg rear facing seat is the safest option for him. If he’s small, you will probably be able to use it until age 7/8.
