You have a group of 30 y o men staying the weekend- what food to buy?

Lots I presume!
DHs childhood friends have all had a rough year for various very sad reasons. They are coming up to ours this weekend to see each other (they all live 3-5 hours apart) and just chill.

What food to get in? Pizzas? Beer, crisps? My mind has gone blank. We've had them and their partners to stay before but I've done a 3 course meal, this will be much more casual I guess.

For anyone suggesting DH should do the shopping- he offered to! He's got the kids today tho whereas I can nip into supermarket on way home from work and do shopping without preschoolers clinging to my leg.

How long will they be staying?

TwoBlueFish · 02/11/2018 10:24

Big pot of chilli and rice, beer, snacks, stuff for sausage/bacon sandwiches or full English in the morning.

Rainbowqueeen · 02/11/2018 10:26

Agree with Twobluefish

Are you doing lunch as well as dinner? If so I’d do pizzas for lunch.

Hope they have a great time

MrsRubyMonday · 02/11/2018 10:27

We normally buy stuff to do a big fry up one morning if we have guests, especially if they have something planned one day (like a strenuous day watching sports on the TV!). Lots of beans, mushrooms eggs and bread so relatively cheap and filling, and can all be chucked into bowls in the oven to stay warm while you cook the next batch.

Ifailed · 02/11/2018 10:28

Ask your DH, they are his friends.

Twisique · 02/11/2018 10:29

Bacon and Sausage Sandwiches for breakfast with lots of coffee and orange juice and ketchup. Lunch at the pub. Fish and chips or chinese for dinner.

MinesATreble · 02/11/2018 10:30

Sounds good. Baked potatoes & chilli, fajitas or lasagne - not original but popular. If you are going to do pudding you could just buy a frozen strudel or something and serve with custard.

Bacon, eggs, sausages and plenty of nice bread would give you options for lunches, or a slap up breakfast. Basically I am just naming meats though Blush. How very clichéd.

If people have enough cashflow you could suggest a breakfast or main meal out.

^^This. A load of pizza, crisps and beer won't go down well if they're all Joe Wicks health and fitness types. Similarly no good offering half a pig's worth of bacon butties if they're all vegan.

OP, I say a big pot of curry or chilli and rice. Crisps, pot noodles, fruit, beer, water and chocolate.

Frosty66611 · 02/11/2018 11:09

Fajitas
Pizzas (don’t get all meaty ones though incase some would prefer plain or veggie toppings)
Bacon & eggs with rolls & ketchup
Coffee/tea and milk
Kettle crisps
Cheese on toast

Who do you think is best qualified to suggest food for this particular '30 YO group of men'.

A load of strangers on the internet, who have no other information, or a man who has known them all for many years, so knows what sort of food and drink they like, and whether they have any religious or dietary requirements? They could all be health freaks or tea total Muslims for all we know.

dinkydonky · 02/11/2018 11:23

We'd probably do a roast or a fish pie or something for dinner, bacon and egg sandwiches for breakfast (maybe with sausage, beans, onions and mushrooms if there weren't tooo many of them).
Nice crisps would definitely get eaten if they were there but wouldn't be missed if they weren't.
A good selection of beers.

I assume your mind wouldn't have immediately jumped to pizza and beer if they were all health-conscious vegetarians!

Acunningruse · 02/11/2018 11:27

Thanks for suggestions, good to know everyone thinking along similar lines. Fajitas or a chilli sounds good.

I did ask DH, who helpfully said they like anything

Well that's good then. Load up the triple carbs!

MrsElijahMikaelson · 02/11/2018 20:56

@barboraofseville. Try being more specific in your postsGrin

Singlenotsingle · 02/11/2018 21:02

Am I missing something here or have I misunderstood? You've got to cater for 30 men for a whole weekend??? I hope they're all chipping in towards the cost?

Redtartanshoes · 02/11/2018 21:16

Bacon sausage eggs and rolls for breakfast.

Pot of chilli/curry/lasagne

Asda create your own pizza

Beer/crisps/dips/stuff to make toasties

MinesATreble · 02/11/2018 21:19

Singlenotsingle yes I think you have. 30yo = 30 year old.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 02/11/2018 21:22

Surely they’ll just go out to eat??
