Board game help.

My brother and his partner both have November and they both want board games FYI they're both in their 30s. So far all they have is trivial persuit and scrabble.

So they like fun games that make your brain work. Novelty games are no use.

I'm never really in that area of the shops, so no idea what's new or popular.

Thank you for any help, as I'm completely stuck.

Great thread - stealing some ideas for Christmas presents!
OP, if they like word games (ie scrabble), I would say both boggle and banana-grams are good, and 2 player-able.

LucyMorningStar · 02/11/2018 13:44

iknow - it's a general knowledge game with a difference, very very good!

myrtleWilson · 02/11/2018 13:46

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective is a great two player game

Has nobody come up with a Brexit-related game yet?

That could be based around forming two teams, throwing a dice, and then depending on the outcome following a set of rules which changes from time to time, has no certain outcome and could go on for over two years, with further extended periods of play possible, and yet with no clear winner at the end. Now that would keep their brains entertained !

Splendor is a good entry level game. Also Mysterium if they want something cooperative

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 02/11/2018 14:33

7 Wonders is my all time favourite.

I absolutely hate Ticket to Ride! -Because I'm shit at 'route domination' style games.-

SunnySomer · 02/11/2018 14:33

IAmNotLikeThem - that is genius! If you could make it I would buy it!
Another popular game in our house (in addition to all those listed above) is the London Board Game. 2-6 players, if children are joining in you can modify it to suit.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 02/11/2018 14:34

For two, the Nordic Ticket to Ride is better than the normal one. For the 'normal' ones, we all prefer the European one to the American one.

Bridget is a 3D game - great for travel & killing time waiting for food in restaurants.

MExican train. How’s can I have forgotten? My set has a train sound which I’m banned from using, though.

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 02/11/2018 23:25

For two players Splendor and Dominion both work well.

There's a game called The Networks that's got quite a fun theme (scheduling TV shows on your own network and trying to get the most viewers).

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 02/11/2018 23:31

@myrtlewilson yes, it's great isn't it. We've finished the original one and now playing the Jack the Ripper/Whitechapel box - can end up discussing cases for ages.

heatherblue · 02/11/2018 23:31

Risk although it's best with a group of players.
Backgammon.
Cribbage, a card game that incorporates moving pegs around a board.

BlueChampagne · 06/11/2018 14:28

Jaipur is good for 2.

Revolution is good for more.

Hotchox · 06/11/2018 14:40

Jaipur - quick and easy to learn, games don't take too long.
Hive - lots of thinking involved there.
Nordic Ticket to Ride. (Other Ticket to Rides are best with 4 or 5 players)
Santorini. Lots of thinking, a bit like Chess but more lighthearted.

HoppyHop · 06/11/2018 14:53

Carcasonne is a new favourite here...you can buy add on packs too (if you get addicted 🙄)

We love Blokus, kind of like a slower strategic game of Tetris.
